"Masters of Photography" contains a good introduction to the life and work of many important photographers. For each photographer, the book includes a few key facts, half a page with biographical and background info, and 3-5 typical images. 3.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic content spoiled by book size
A great book that covers most, but not all of the historical and modern photographic greats.

However let down by its small page size (book is as small as a small paperback novel) which detracts from the overall visual experience as well as having photos over a two page spread that clearly does not work. Print & Paper quality is excellent though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introductory book, 6 Feb 2009

This review is from: Masters of Photography: A Complete Guide to the Greatest Artists of the Photographic Age (Paperback)
"Masters of Photography" contains a good introduction to the life and work of many important photographers. For each photographer, the book includes a few key facts, half a page with biographical and background info, and 3-5 typical images. With several dozens of photographers covered, the book focuses on presenting a broad number of photographers, rather than on an in-depth approach of the work of the greatest of them. This makes the book particularly suitable as a beginner's guide. I have some minor doubts on the selection of photographers (I would expect to find e.g. Josef Sudek in the book) and images presented (the images of Cartier-Bresson are not his most typical, I feel), but overall the book is fine as an introductory book and a guide for further reading. The presentation of the photographers is done in alphabetical order; personally, I would prefer some more elaborated classification (e.g. by genre). The accompanying texts are well-written and concise.

The price is attractive and the print and binding quality are good. My biggest complaint is the format of the book, which is unnecessarily small. This results in many photographs being split in two pages, which severely damages their aesthetics.

Overall, the book is a good beginner's guide to the masters of photography, with a very good value for money.

Use this book as a loose guide, or a travel companion, but certainly not for those looking for photographic and visual detail.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but..., 17 April 2009

Agree with Dimitris. The big problem with this book is its small format, which is just not suitable for these types of books. The second problem is the bad selection of artists' works in some cases, such as Atget and Kertesz. But, overall it's a nice and short introduction to many of the classics.

This publication is a must for students of photography. It is very comprehensive and covers all aspects of the genre in enough detail to create interest and encourage deeper investigation. The text is well written and the reproduction quality of the images is amazing. The A5 size makes it an easily portable publication that can fit comfortably into pocket, bag or laptop case.

I was expecting a good book but was pleasantly surprised to find it is brilliant! It's informative and well presented although it's only A5 size, it's packed with great pix and info.
If you're into photography get it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Study resource, 16 Nov 2011
This review is from: Masters of Photography: A Complete Guide to the Greatest Artists of the Photographic Age (Paperback)
This book is a great resource for those studying or interested in photography. I covers a lot of the pioneers of photography. The image quality is superb and the book contains small biography for each of the featured photographers.

Masters of Photography is a collection of both historical and contemporary photographers.

The format of the book is unusual as compared to others. It does not follow an A-Z list or an historical line. What the book does is concentrates on the photographers. This format is likeable, as it equally places the photographers from the past to the present.

The format covers various aspects of photography such as architecture, portraiture, fashion and documentary to name but a few. It reveals information of the photographer and presents some of their work.

There are 55 photograhers who are explored and include amongst others, Berenice Abbott, Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke-White, Lewis Hine, Andreas Gursky, Lee Friedlander, James Nachtwey, Cindy Sherman, and Steve McCurry.

A highly recommended book for students starting out on either fine art photography or commercial photography courses. A highly recommended book for amatuer photographers that want to know the history of the process they use.

But get the full size version so you can open it properly and appreciate the images. I accidentally bought the small one and it won't open sufficiently without breaking the spine, which is annoying.

If you are tempted by this book, buy it! You can't go wrong, at this price it's worth having on the shelf for occasional use. Inspirational, to use an awful Americanism.
