Not every doctor who monster is quite as well remembered as the daleks or the cybermen. Some never caught the imagination quite as well or were such a success on screen, and thus they faded into tv obscurity remembered only by the fans.

Such was fate for the krotons. only seen in a late 1960's story with the second doctor. A rather cheap story, and they were rather cheap looking creations.

But the strength of the krotons was in their voices. strong and powerful. Which makes them ideal characters for audio.

Big finish have thus resurrected them for a one off story involving the sixth doctor and his companion charley pollard.

This is a single story, complete in sixty minutes on one disc. It's set in the middle of a story arc involving the doctor and charley and secrets she has in regards to her origin. But save for one line near the end this never touches on that so casual listeners will have no trouble getting into it.

One a seemingly deserted and dead world, humans are mining the caverns. The leader of the expedition is not making himself popular with the rest of it. But when the krotons strike, all are in deadly danger.

This is a fairly standard story with a plot that doesnt offer any great surprises, but it's a competent production and a good script. The cast are great, especially lead guest star philip madoc. And the krotons voices really do work superbly in this format.

A decent little adventure all in all. Do listen to the interviews after the story as well, because philip madoc is an excellent interviewee and it's a really good listen as a result

The Krotons are returning...

Timelord Thoughts.
To be honest I wasn't expecting much from this bonus release yet how pleasantly surprised I was when I listened to this gem of a story by Nicholas Briggs.

This has great performances throughout from the excellent performances of Colin Baker & India Fisher as the Sixth Doctor & Charley to the rich vocal tones of the late Phillip Madoc as Commander Cobden.

The Krotons make there Big Finish debut in this audio adventure & actually sound better in a audio format than there on screen apperance & although the plot doesn't offer any type of twists it does offer solid entertaining storytelling that kept me hooked throughout.

With great production values from Big Finish & a enjoyable bonus interview after the credits with actor Phillip Madoc this is 60 minutes of entertaining classic Doctor Who.

Timelord Rating 8/10.
