4.0 out of 5 stars Decent little story, doesn't stand alone though.
This is a decent little addition to the big finish range. Featuring the 7th Doctor, Susan Mendes and Karlendorf, this is set during the events of the first Dalek Empire series. It helps if you've listened to this (and the second series) before trying this adventure.

This is a decent little addition to the big finish range. Featuring the 7th Doctor, Susan Mendes and Karlendorf, this is set during the events of the first Dalek Empire series. It helps if you've listened to this (and the second series) before trying this adventure.

A good yarn, several major characters (including the Doctor) are explored and developed quite well, making this a useful add on to the range rather than the tired retread it could so easily have been. There is even a link with tying up some loose ends from a 3rd Doctor adventure for fans of that kind of thing.

Entertaining and well worth getting, as long as you're familiar with the Dalek Empire series.

3)The Dalek Scientific Division uses Ogrons to quell the crowds on Zaleria.

Plot Synopsis.
The secret resistance led by Susan Mendes & Kalendorf encounters the Seventh Doctor on the planet Zaleria during Dalek occupation a planet which hides a secret of its own as the planets inhabitants try & survive, yet they live with the fear of the return of the Daleks.

Timelord Thoughts.
Return of the Daleks is a spin off adventure of Dalek Empire that features the Seventh Doctor becoming entwined in events of Dalek Empire as writer Nicholas Briggs merges both series together that gives the Doctor, Susan Mendes & Karlendorf plenty to do throughout this 70 minute running time.

The Seventh Doctor has rarely been characterised better travelling solo & nearing the end of his seventh life who becomes involved in the historical events on the planet Zaleria once known as Spiridon as he battles against his oldest & deadliest enemies The Daleks.

Nicholas Briggs script moves at a fast pace & the scenes were the Doctor sacrifices himself to years of Dalek slavery in order to keep Kalendorf alive is delivered with such dramatic realism & the Doctors plan in defeating the Daleks is very much in tone of the darker manipulative incarnation of the Seventh Doctor which is aided by a very strong performance from Sylvester McCoy who is simply superb in this audio adventure.

Sarah Mowat & former Blake's 7 actor Gareth Thomas play Susan Mendes & Kalendorf at their most impressive as they secretly build a rebellion against the Daleks & also help aid the Doctor.

Overall, Return Of The Daleks is a tightly written adventure by the voice of the Daleks himself Nicholas Briggs who creates a unique story here & gives the Doctor some wonderful moments against his notorious enemies & is a excellent little adventure that is well worth a listen.

Timelord Rating.
8/10

This review is from: Return of the Daleks (Doctor Who) (Audio CD)
a one off doctor who audio story, complete in sixty minutes. It comes on one disc. It features Sylvester Mccoy as the doctor, without any travelling companions. And it features him battling his arch enemies the daleks.

The story involves a few characters and the setting from the earlier dalek empire audio series, most notably a pair of humans who try to work to make life better for slaves in the dalek empire whilst secretly fermenting rebellion. These are good characters because they present you with a moral dilemma that makes you think. what would you do in their situation? and it never presents any easy answers.

The story involves a world where the daleks have sent a science expedition. they're looking for something. and they have to be stopped...

the revelation as to what they're looking for will please long term fans of the show as it ties into a tv story. It's something that the casual listener should have no trouble picking up, though. and you can get into this easily enough without having heard the earlier dalek audio series.

The doctor is well presented, as he doesn't feature much in the first half of the story, and is more a shadowy and manipulative presence in the shadows, which fits the character of the seventh doctor perfectly.

The one major problem with this is that the ending comes on the listener rather suddenly. It's a clever ending and it's also well in keeping with the character of the doctor but it takes a while to sink in.

A perfectly decent little audio for what it is, though.

The disc ends with just under eleven minutes worth of trailers for the earlier dalek empire audios.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't overlook this little gem, 9 Jan 2010

This is a one episode 60 minute story that was originally given away free to subscribers. These stories are often overlooked, however, this is far and away the best free audio. Sylvester McCoy is brilliantly cast as the manipulative background character he does so well. His involvement is minimal until he saves the day at the end. It sounds very familiar but is done very well. There are no regular companions but as the characters are all from the Dalek Empire series of stories they come across as very well acted three dimensional characters in a universe where you know a lot has happened that (having not listened to the Dalek Empire stories) is briefly alluded to but not essential for the enjoyment of this story.

Overall a great Dalek story and still at a decent price for non-subscribers. McCoy is at the top of his game and he works well solo. Worth buying.

The battle in the Dalek Empire continues, this is Sylvester McCoy at his best. A great story with Gareth Thomas and Sarah Mowat returning as my favorite characters, Kalendorf and Suze.
This Audio story is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you are a fan of 'Dalek Empire' or just a 'Dr Who' fan.
I hope Nicholas Briggs continues to write these great stories and I for one will certainly be on the lookout for the next.
