5.0 out of 5 stars The Two Romanas, 2 Aug 2005

This review is from: Gallifrey 2.1 - Lies (Doctor Who S.) (Audio CD)
This 5th chapter in Big Finish's audio Gallifrey series kicks off a second season in fine style, with a previously untold episode in Romana's life resulting in some big revelations for the character, including an explanation of why she frivorously wasted a regeneration all those years ago in Destiny of the Daleks. Mary Tamm returns as the original Romana, so this play gives us two Romana's to go along with two K-9's, and while Leela is rather pushed to the back in this episode this is still startling stuff. Very heavily obsessed with continuity, this story really requires the listener to be familiar not only with the previous 4 Gallifrey audios but with Romana's television past and her appearances in Big Finish's 8th Doctor audios, but for the hardcore fans this is great stuff.

This review is from: Gallifrey 2.1 - Lies (Doctor Who S.) (Audio CD)
This is the first of 5 cds in the second series of the Gallifrey stories, set in the Doctor Who universe. At the end of the first series, Leela has discovered what happened to Andred, and Romana has for now settled the issue of the FreeTime terrorists. But change is occurring on Gallifrey, not all of it welcome. Romana has opened up the Academy at Gallifrey for alien students, and there are those on Gallifrey who do not find the changes the President is making to be good ones for the world they want to live in. How far will they go to stop her? And in the meantime, who or what is the voice that Romana I heard in the Vaults underneath the Gallifreyan Capitol when she was a young student at the Academy, tutored by Braxiatel? And who is using Andred to do their dirty work?

There’s all sorts of skullduggery going on in this story, and it’s a great setup for the second series. We now know the characters in the Gallifreyan corridoors of power (Braxiatel, Darkel, Narvin) and we get to know more of some others (Castellan Winter offers a nice contrast, and the Archivist). Leela and Romana are about to find themselves embroiled in a whole mess of new trouble, and K-9 Mark I and Mark II will need to have all their wits about them to help their mistress(es).

I’m listening to series 2 again before I get on to the more recent series and catch up with the Gallifrey stories up to series 6, and am really enjoying this. Great stuff, looking forward to the next part of the story.
