This review is from: A Storm of Angels (Doctor Who: Unbound) (Audio CD)
A Storm of Angels is a direct sequel to the audio play Auld Mortality, the first in the Doctor Who 'Unbound' series, which features new actors playing 'alternate' Doctors separate from established Doctor Who continuity. Where Auld Mortality was a unique experience focusing on the Doctor's family background on Gallifrey, A Storm of Angels is a more traditional adventure, with the alternative 1st Doctor and Susan on the run from the Time Lords for interfering with history. This time it looks as though the Time Lords are right, as Elizabethan England now has an empire that stretches into space, and the Doctor and Susan find themselves stranded on Francis Drake's spaceship as it brings back a dangerous cargo from the Asteroid Belt. Unfortunately A Storm of Angels doesn't quite live up to the originality of Auld Mortality, as it gradually turns into a fairly typical tale of monsters attempting to invade the Earth, but it is a superior runaround filled with bizarre ideas. Bayldon makes a great 1st Doctor, and Carol Ann Ford gets a meatier role this time round as the play picks up on the fractured reality ending of Auld Mortality. If you enjoyed Auld Mortality you'll enjoy this, and if you though Auld Mortality was a bit too 'out there' you're likely to enjoy this more. Recommended.

This review is from: A Storm of Angels (Doctor Who: Unbound) (Audio CD)
This is the seventh of the ‘Unbound’ series of audio adventures from Big Finish. Released between 2003 and 2008, this was a series that asked a lot of ‘what if’ questions about the show and produced a range of fascinating stories. It ran for 8 releases, and is some of the best work to have come out of Big Finish productions. The original series was released in 2003, this release was released in 2005 and the first of two specials that revisited characters from the original run. The story is in 4 half hour episodes on two discs.

This episode revisits the alternative first Doctor played by Geoffrey Bayldon in the series opener ‘Auld Mortality’. The Doctor and his granddaughter Susan are now wanderers in space and time, on the run from the Time Lords and generally having fun. But as a result of their adventures tme has gone wrong. They land in Elizabethan England to find Francis Drake the commander of a space ship rather than the sailing variety.

What follows is a very entertaining and fun adventure as the irascible Doctor tries to sort it all out. It follows on from Auld Mortality, and you do need to have heard that first in order to understand a lot of what is going on. The recreation of a ‘steam-punk’ Elizabethan England is very well done and centres on some fascinating characters from history At the heart of the story is the relationship between the Doctor and Susan, and this is explored in this new reality in a beautiful manner that was never achieved in the original.

This s in the end an exciting adventure with a moving interplay between the Doctor and Susan. Bayldon is, as always, excellent, and pretty much carries the whole piece all by himself. It’s a great sequel to a great story, 5 stars.
