This is the sixth of the ‘Unbound’ series of audio adventures from Big Finish. Released between 2003 and 2008, this was a series that asked a lot of ‘what if’ questions about the show and produced a range of fascinating stories. It ran for 8 releases, and is some of the best work to have come out of Big Finish productions.
This story was the last of the original series to be released in 2003. Two more releases would follow in 2005 and 2008. But when this came out it seemed like it would be the last of this remarkable series. And it was a crying shame to leave such a stupendous series on this note, as this release is dire. It joins ‘The Dark Husband’ as being the worst thing that Big Finish have ever produced. In my effort to listen to and review all of my audio books I was absolutely dreading hearing this again, and almost didn’t bother replaying it. Luckily the two further releases (Storm of Angels and Masters Of War) would redeem things somewhat.
This story asks ‘What if, at the end of War Games, the second Doctor had escaped the Timelords, committed suicide in his escape attempt and regenerated as a woman?’ It’s an interesting concept, the idea of a female Doctor is one that needs to be explored, and the way in which it is brought about was genius. But after these two good ideas the rest of the play is just cr@p. Totally unlistenable cr@p. The trouble is that it tries to be funny. Now Big Finish can do comedy very well (The Kingmaker, Castle of Fear etc), but here they just totally fail. The whole play seems to revolve around this alternative Doctor getting ridiculously drunk and throwing up. Not funny and not fun to listen to. David Tennant has a few good moments as an inept Timelord sent to bring the Doctor to justice, but his best efforts are not enough to rescue this turkey.
It’s an absolutely dire mess of a production. Avoid, do not spoil your impressions of this otherwise wonderful series by listening to this tripe. 1 star. It should be zero.
