5.0 out of 5 stars Complete description of the evolution of the Porsche 911
The 'Porsche 911 Story' is one of the "Bibles" of the Porsche 911. It offers a complete picture of the evolution of the 911, from its roots in the 356 through to the last of the "true", air-cooled Porsches.
It falls between a mechanic's manual and a photo-filled story of the great car. It finds the middle ground perfectly and is an essential part...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not great
I ordered this book due to the great reviews it received here on Amazon and because other authors on matters 911 had mentioned it favorably. What it does well is covering the early development stages of the 911, even though I find it amazing that a lot of diagrams (black & white) were labeled in German and the author didn't bother to translate them. The 997 generation 1...

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate bible for 911 enthusiasts, 21 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Porsche 911 Story (Hardcover)
Although deeply technical in places, this is an excellent piece of work. The attention to detail is superb and Paul Frere really shows a passion for the porsche marque as well the 911 itself. My only criticisms would be the order the book is written and the poor sequencing of illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the 911, 30 April 2008
This review is from: Porsche 911 Story (Hardcover)
Paul Frere, the writer of this book ( died in Feb 2008) was a legend within porsche, as a racing driver, a test driver and someone whose opinion was highly respected by Porsche. For example he was present when the PCCM brakes ( ceramic brakes) were introduced and tested in the 996 turbo and present in all major Porsche events, presentations etc. So, he was probably one of the best people to write about an iconic car and its numerous models from 1963 to today. Frere writes about the origins of the 911 and takes us through all the models throughout the years with an engineer's attention to detail. Apart from the numerous pictures there are many diagrams, charts and graphs that indicate performance and design characteristics of each model. There is a lot of useful and interesting details that show how the 911 has and is evolving over 4 decades now. This book has all the technical info one may need to have a very good understanding of all of the 911 models and is a perfect reference to any of the 911 models. A must have, in my opinion for any 911 enthusiast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable and Instructive, 30 Sep 2009

Clearly written by someone who really knows his stuff. A really good history of 911 development from the 60s to the modern day and includes lots of fascinating technical detail. There's also a complete section on the car's racing pedigree. Paul Frere explains why Porsche had to abandon the enthusiasts much loved air-cooled engines and embrace water cooling after the last-of-line 993 series. I bought the book as I was looking to buy a 993 or 996 series car and it helped me decide to buy the 996 C4S.

This is quite simply the finest book about the development of the Porsche 911. I have collected four editions over the years ending with this, the 8th edition. If you want to know about the car's history look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the most comprehensive one to buy !, 11 Sep 2013

This review is from: Porsche 911 Story 9th Edition: The Entire Development History (Hardcover)
I started buying another version of the book on 911. The book is big and heavy yet the content is very shallow. Based upon recommendations I received from Forum Board friends, they all recommended this version. It is very comprehensive on the entire development of the 911 series. It has history as well as the technical aspect of the vehicle. The short side is some of the photo's quality are poor and has the appearance of photos with low resolution and was then enlarged afterward. Granted of course when those pictures were taken, digital photography hasn't been invented yet. If you are not interested in history or technical aspect of the 911 and simply want a book with great pictures then this book is probably not for you. Else, this is the best one available.

This book is the business, it goes into great detail (maybe too much if you only have a passing interest in Porsche) about the hole development of this iconic car.

4.0 out of 5 stars A celibration of the technical achievement of the 911, 8 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Porsche 911 Story (Hardcover)
You will be disappointed if you are looking for pages of road test reports or even some constructive criticism.
The book is a technical tour de force providing excellent insite into the engineering development of the car over the years. A book you dip in and out of to find your facts.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not great, 20 Sep 2010
This review is from: Porsche 911 Story (Hardcover)
I ordered this book due to the great reviews it received here on Amazon and because other authors on matters 911 had mentioned it favorably. What it does well is covering the early development stages of the 911, even though I find it amazing that a lot of diagrams (black & white) were labeled in German and the author didn't bother to translate them. The 997 generation 1 is hardly covered at all and some of the stats are plain wrong such as the torque given for the 3.6 l engine. The 997 generation 2 isn't mentioned at all even though the car has been on the market for two years now and a good author should have had a source within the company giving him the information about the new car before it was released, so that he could update his material accordingly and publish at or shortly after it was made available on the market. I had the feeling the revised versions / additions were not written by the original author but some ghostwriter to keep selling copies of what may have been a good book at the end of the 1980s.

very interesting overview of the 911 range, only criticism is the lack of colour photography in the book, shame they have opted for so many black and white images.
