5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fascinating.
In these days when most things are observed superficially this is a fantastic introduction into the ship construction and operation in the 1910's, and an insight into early C20 heavy engineering and methods. I stress introduction, as it does not labour any aspect to boredom, it whets the appetite, in fact some areas could do with more detail (see Johnathan Smith's...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a rivet counter book thats for sure.
As a Titanic rivet-counter (or Titanic techie) anything like this deserves scrutiny. I can understand where the authors were trying to go with this book. Certainly nothing new, but in this case a simplified and blatant rip-off from the Bruce Beveridge two volume set 'Titanic: The Ship Magnificent'. You cannot do Titanic justice with anything like this, but that's where...

In these days when most things are observed superficially this is a fantastic introduction into the ship construction and operation in the 1910's, and an insight into early C20 heavy engineering and methods. I stress introduction, as it does not labour any aspect to boredom, it whets the appetite, in fact some areas could do with more detail (see Johnathan Smith's critique below) There are so many things I had never heard before, the third shaft was turbine driven by exhaust steam, a steam reciprocating fridge plant and how to bend a ships frame - and so on. I showed it to both the Chief Engineers and Officers on my ship and they were all amazed by it. Very enjoyable and J. Smith is right, for more follow his lead, but read this one first. It was also a good reminder of our lost heritage in heavy manufacturing of which we were once the lead (S. Korea delivers a ship - ocean going-every two days out of three all year!!) GREAT FUN, loved it.

A very good insight into the Titanic.
The technical side of the ship, overlooked in most Titanic books is well covered with some interesting photos and drawings.
All in all an excellent book on a fascinating subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars good book that explains the construction & operation of the ship, 24 July 2011

This review is from: RMS Titanic Manual: 1909-1912 Olympic Class (Owner's Workshop Manual) (Hardcover)
overall this is a good book & details the construction & operation of the Titanic, there are some very good photo's of the inside of the ship, both of the cabins & the engineering side of the ship & also of the construction of the ship in the dockyard as it was being built, there are also many design plans / blueprints of the ship.

some other reviewers have marked the book down because a couple of the photo's are of the RMS Olympic which is exactly the same class of ship as the RMS Titanic & the differences are very small & most of the differences were on the interior of the ship, like the cabin designs & slightly different layout, but these differences are so small & anyway the book does say this on the front cover, that it's about the Olympic class of ships which the Titanic was part of as well as the HMHS Britannic, so if you want to understand the workings of the Titanic in a easy to read & well set out way, then this is the book to buy.

Again, an excellent purchase. Mr J Watson is an avid collector of Olympic class liners and is, in fact, building a scaled model of the Britannic as we speak. Anything on the Britannic is a must.

I bought this book for my husband who has a keen interest and personal connection with Titanic. It has answered so many questions and makes you realise what a fantastic feat of engineering it was for that magnificent ship to be built. Worth every penny. One happy husband!

5.0 out of 5 stars Titanic Surprise, 8 May 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: RMS Titanic Manual: 1909-1912 Olympic Class (Owner's Workshop Manual) (Hardcover)
It was truly a 'Titanic surprise' when I opened up the package to find The RMS Titanic Manual and there was the very familiar Haynes style manual - and it works. I was expecting lots of smaller photos and a sort of instruction on 'how to' . . . - but found big photos and great diagrams with a very authoritative text. Most of it is familiar - BUT surprise surprise - there are lots of 'builders' gems which are little known or recently researched - and this makes it more of the 'manual' that is the surprise. I have a collection of over 150 books on the 'Titanic' and still I sat right down and enjoyed reading the Haynes version end to end. I don't agree with some reviews that its a bit light - sure it is not a definitive work - its not meant to be and I think the 'tongue in cheek' approach is what makes it worthy of addition to any enthusiasts or first time 'Titanic' readers library. Congratulations on an enjoyable and illuminating work.
