4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting look at the forgotten vessels, 27 Dec 2008

This review is from: The War on Hospital Ships 1914-1918 (Hardcover)
With an interest in hospital ship this title was a must have item. As soon as I came across it I knew it would prove invaluable. As a reference aid it was indeed as I expected.

Although protected by the Geneva Convention many vessels were lost to the u-boat, often breaching the convention. The livery of the Red Cross afforded many hospital ships no protection, in some cases making them an easier target for the belligerent.

The book takes the reader on a wonderful tour of what hospital ships are expected to accommodate, and lays down the founding of these vessels quite well. It looks at the main hospital ships in great detail.
There is a similar book "Hospital Ships and Ambulance Trains" which covers the topic well, however this new book is well illustrated and brings the subject matter up to date.

The author has obviously worked hard to produce a very in depth look at hospital ships with this book The War on Hospital Ships 1914-1918and I believe he has done so admirably. It is a book that will find a home amongst my collection and one that I would happily recommend.

Being a Military Historian (Haslar heritage Group) and author this book is incredible and full of historical information and certainly brings home the dangers faced by medical staff and patients in WWI at a time when under the Red Cross one would expect patients and their carers would be safe from attack -WRONG. A cracking read and congrats to Stephen McGreal for a superb book.
