5.0 out of 5 stars Family history researcher, 30 Mar 2011
This review is from: Salford Pals , A History of the Salford Brigade: 15th, 16th, 19th and 20th Battalions Lancashire Fusiliers (Paperback)
I loved this book. It is very comprehensive in relation to the accumulated research on the Salford Battalions and full of stories about individuals too. I could really feel the journey my Great Uncle took from when he enlisted to when he died, such is the detail of whereabouts and battles and their initial training. All the Pals are listed in the index so it could be a means of finding a relative who served in the 1st WW. Useful information about other sources of information is included and the photographs are compelling. I recommend this book without reservation. A wonderful tribute to brave young men.

GIVES YOU A GOOD INSITE INTO HOW SOILDERS ENDURED DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR ESPECIALLY THE PALS REGIMENTS,THERE INITIAL ENTHUSIASUM TO THE REALITY OF THE TRENCHES. MY OWN PERSONAL COMPLAINT ABOUT THE BOOK IS THAT IT HARDLY COVERS THE 4TH SALFORDS, JUST COVERING A FEW PAGES WITH LITTLE DETAIL AND I PARTICUALLY WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THEM AS MY GRANDFATHER WAS IN THE BRIGADE AND WAS ONE OF THE ORIGINALS.

Authoritative, well written book by an author who clearly is committed to the subject. Tells the poignant facts about the well intentioned but ultimately misguided folly of typical Pals Battalions in the Great War. Thought provoking of the pointless slaughter of the many thousands of young men who served for whatever reason. Would they see their sacrifice for King and country as being worth it in the Britain of today?
