5.0 out of 5 stars In the Shadow of Death, 18 Dec 2007
This review is from: In the Shadow of Death: The Story of a Medic on the Burma Railway 1942-45 (Hardcover)
The experience of that time for Idris was so devastating, his doctor advised him to write about it, to get it out of his system! It took him and his daughter 60 years to get it into print. This was due to his 'no holds barred' descriptions of the events he lived through. Today criticism of those in authority is accepted practice.

There are only a few books of first hand experience of Japanese treatment of prisoners of war, this is one that sees the help, that one man with no medical experience gives to his comrades, his own experiences and that of his fellow men.

It also shows the inhumanity to man that is experienced through war and what ordinary men can do to help each other even in the face of severe adversity.

A good read and one that stays in the mind, of the suffering and even the help that some of these of these poor men received. It even shows the men in charge, as not quite as helpful to their own side as they should have been.

I would heartily recommend this read, It would also make a terrific film.

My Dad was a POW on this railway and I was advised to get this book which I am part way through now. Totally revealing and a fascinating read. If you have a specific interest or not it is well worth reading to more fully understand what went on in those dark days but to learn of the humour and ability for men to survive against all odds and for some who stood out in their ability to help other even when they must have been desperate themselves. The brutality of their captors is beyond belief but I know it to be true and perhaps even understated at times.
