This review is from: Light Revolution: Health Architecture and the Sun (Paperback)
Richard Hobday is the world authority on sunlight and health and so is well placed to advocate hospital and town planning that takes advantage of the free healing resource that is natural sunlight. Although official ignorance and the fear of malignant melanoma has somewhat superceded previous wisdom on the health benefits of sunlight, less than a century ago, pioneers were building hospitals that used sunlight to disinfect wards and in order successfully to treat conditions as diverse as rickets and tuberculosis. Hobday lists both the ancient classical view on the healing power of sunlight and the growing scientific research that calls into question recent scaremongering about its dangers, listing benefits that range from the speedy healing of wounds through reducing obesity to reducing the incidence of heart disease and internal cancers.

Modern planners ignore such research at a cost to all of us as increasingly microorganisms become immune to antibiotics and new skyscraper develoments throw much of their surroundings into shadow. We all pay the price of this cavalier ignorance as to what should be regarded as a vital source of healing energy. Hobday's clear and highly readable style presents all of this in a surprisingly entertaining manner.

This is an important book, and deserves to be read widely as it dispels the paranoid current thinking on the supposed dangers of sunbathing. You owe it to yourself to read it and to take note- it just might save your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars The case for the right to sunlight, 9 Mar 2007

This review is from: Light Revolution: Health Architecture and the Sun (Paperback)
Anyone involved in architecture, town planning or public-health should read this book and do themselves and the rest of us a favour. Anyone thinking of building, buying or renting a house should also make sure they read this work so that they can optimise their investment and health. Dr. Hobday explains in clear terms the importance of sunlight to our lives and how anybody deprived of it can suffer severe consequences to their health. After passive smoking, sunlight deprivation could well become the next big public health issue; if one thing is evident from this book it is that we should have a right to sunlight.
