This review is from: The Turn (Modern Voices) (Paperback)
Poor Marcontonio Ravi has grand plans for his daughter: he plans to marry her off to elderly, but rich, Don Diego. Don Diego is not expected to survive long into the marriage, allowing his daughter to inherit his wealth and then choose for herself the young husband she really wishes. Ravi cannot understand the town's consternation, nor his daughter's refusal. He is being a good father, providing for his daughter's future security and happiness, with a small temporary sacrifice.

That is the premise of this great short comic novel. A fantastic little slice of Italian literature, easily read of one afternoon. It is engaging, funny, and hugely entertaining. The characters are charming, and the writing is superb. I'd previously read his collection Loveless Love, which is slightly more austere though both share the theme of love twisted out of shape by humans. I enjoyed reading both very much, and I'm very keen to seek out more of his work. A wonderful, little known-writer.
