Carlo Levi has written a very accurate description of what it was like to be an Italian during the 1940-1950's, in southern Italy. This portrait is frank there are no precious bits of niceties, nor sugar coated descriptions here; instead the reader gets the full bore of the region , the way it used to be.

Interesting but not as good as Christ stopped at Eboli which I particularly liked. I don't think the translator is as good because the poetic flow of the language wasn't as good. Still...worth reading.
