4.0 out of 5 stars Misleading title
Be careful. I bought this book assuming it was an update of the previous Rough Guide which included the Canadian Rockies and Aberta as well as Alaska. Not an unreasonable assumption since it is called the 4th edition. However, this guide covers a different area- it has far more detail about the US states and little about Canada. It would be less misleading if they had...

1.0 out of 5 stars inaccurate title
As a regular user of Rough Guides this was a disappointment - the text is interesting enough, but the content doesn't match with the title; calling it the Rough Guide to Pacific Northwest/subtitle Oregon, Washington, Southern British Columbia is misleading because it covers only the western parts of the first two states, and Southern British Columbia seems to the writers...

Not an unreasonable assumption since it is called the 4th edition. However, this guide covers a different area- it has far more detail about the US states and little about Canada. It would be less misleading if they had given it a different title since in effect it's the 1st edition of a new book rather than a 4th edition as it claims to be.I'm sure it's excellent if it's the exact area you want .

As a regular user of Rough Guides this was a disappointment - the text is interesting enough, but the content doesn't match with the title; calling it the Rough Guide to Pacific Northwest/subtitle Oregon, Washington, Southern British Columbia is misleading because it covers only the western parts of the first two states, and Southern British Columbia seems to the writers to be Vancouver Island and Vancouver. Not what I'd hoped for, they should change the title NOW, or warn customers what the book really contains. First time I've felt cheated!

My wife and I have always used Rough Guides in preference to other guide books and have done several road trips in the States with various USA Rough Guides and found them very useful. For planning a forthcoming trip to the Pacific Northwest we decided to get this regional guide instead of just using our USA Rough Guide because it obviously gives greater detail and also because it includes southern British Columbia as well as Washington and Oregon.

The book begins with a colour section with a map and sections on where/when to go, followed by photographs of 28 things not to miss - including Mount St.Helens, Crater Lake, whale watching, Stanley Park in Vancouver etc. There is then the 'Basics' section with chapters on 'Getting there', 'Getting around', 'Outdoor pursuits', 'Gay and lesbian travellers' etc etc. Then we get the standard 'Guide' itself, divided up into eleven geographical areas, including Seattle, Portland and Vancouver. These area/city/town sections are further divided up into manageable areas and include detais of things to see, small maps, accommodation options (including cheap hostels), places to eat, nightlife etc. Finally there is a 'Contexts' section with notes on history, wildlife, books and films and also a detailed index

I should note that although I did purchase this book I later also looked at the Lonely Planet Guide to the Pacific Northwest and that did seem just as good if not better than the Rough Guide. It has a similar layout and when I checked accommodation options in one town in both guides the Lonely Planet did have the more detailed and accurate information. However, I'm sure that the Rough Guide will serve us well both in planning the trip and using when we travel around the area.

This guidebook is very helpful when planning a trip. Most towns - even small ones - get a mention, and the information is accurate.
