This is the most amazing travel guide I have ever read. Every time I go away I always buy a Rough Guide (nothing else compares) but this one really does surpass all expectations. Having just returned from a 2 week holiday to California, I fully recommend this book. It has everything, down to the last detail. I was so impressed with the accuracy and attention to detail - whoever wrote the book must have spent a long time researching it. We travelled LA, the 2 day drive to the Grand Canyon (taking in Joshua Tree, Mojave and London Bridge...), the Canyon itself, Hoover Dam, Vegas, Death Valley, the California Coast and finally San Francisco. This book has everything about all of them, and more (we missed out Yosemite...). Its not just for backpackers too (as "Rough Guide" may suggest??) - we had pre-booked hotels and a car before we went (all the details of the hotels came from the Guide).
If you ever go to California - do NOT be without this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars IF YOU ARE GOING TO CALIFORNIA..., 30 Aug. 2004
This review is from: California (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Paperback)
Get this book before leaving for California. As a California historian, columnist, travel writer and author of SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MISCELLANY, I found this book an excellent source to advise visitors to read prior to making the trip. My only negative comment is that this book, as with too many others like it, refelcts incorrectly that Southern California is all about 1. Los Angeles (and the immediate area) or 2. San Diego. In actuality, lifetime residents (as myself) will tell you there is so much more to So-Cal than L.A. and San Diego. And, contrary to the belief that So-Cal is nearly always sunny, this is only true in the coastal areas. Travel 100 miles inland to the mountains and you will experience 4-seasons, complete with snowy winters. Go further into the deserts and you'll expereince searing summers and windy winters.

4.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide, 21 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: California (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Paperback)
This guide to California is packed full of useful information. However, I am concerned that it is likely to be out of date for some things, eg prices, because it was published in 2003.
