5.0 out of 5 stars Tells It How It Was, 17 Dec. 2011
This review is from: War Is War (1/28Th London Regiment ,Artists Rifles) (Paperback)
With the coming of the 100th anniversary of the Great War, many books by so called "experts" will be published to make their point about the men involved. Alfred Burrage was there and witnessed the full horror of the 1917 Ypres offensive from the viewpoint of a Private of an infantry battalion. An educated man and an established writer at the time, he is able to articulate the full sense of desperation, futility and weariness of the front line soldier.
At times sarcastic, he gives the impression that certain members of the officers mess were quite useless and only got where they were from their social standing in life while the nco's at the bases were nothing but bullies and cowards.
It must be remembered that Burrage wrote this book some years after the end of the war as a riposte to the many officers memoirs that were published at the time. As someone who was overlooked for a commission he may have an axe to grind but for me it is one of the best books written about life on the Western Front in a war zone and a must read for anybody who wants to understand the experience of the "Poor Bloody Infantry."

4.0 out of 5 stars Kindle pages' bad formatting, 14 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: War is War (Kindle Edition)
The book itself is a fantastic read, one which I would place alongside Graves and Sassoon's memoirs as a vivid account of the Western Front. However, beware of the kindle version - I needed to analyse this book for a university essay and found that the kindle version doesnt have page numbers, and isnt even formatted to the same size as the print text so referencing the pages was impossible. I returned my kindle copy and bought the paperback instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Non-fiction, WWI, excellent, 30 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Humorous, honest, well written, first-hand account of the horrors (and amusements) of life and death the WWI trenches. Brilliant, one of the very best of its kind. The title is sardonic but who chose that utterly inappropriate pic for the jacket? Perhaps it was an attempt to convey a subtle point but it misses the target, Ignore that and enjoy this great book.

If you're looking for a book that gives an idea of how 'Tommy Atkins' lived during WW1, without it all being blood and guts, then this will be for you.
