3.0 out of 5 stars Verdun
The cost and delivery were fine, however it did not give me all the information I was looking for but that said I did find it interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touring the Verdun Battlefield, 28 Jun 2011
This review is from: Verdun And The Battles For Its Possession An Illustrated Guide To The Battlefields 1914-1918. (Battle for Possession) (Paperback)
I will be visiting the Battlefield of Verdun next year May 2012, with a group of friends. This book is a reprint of the Illustrated Michelin Guide to the Battlefields (1914 - 1918). At the moment the book looks like excellent value with a brief account of the years 1870 up to 1914 as an introduction. It includes from page 10 to page 30. The German offensive in 1916 to the French - American offensive in 1918 and the battles in between. To be produced so early after the 14-18 war and in such detail is really remarkable. It is as it says an illustrated guide and much of the rest of the book shows the area and Verdun itself as it was before the war and the results in 1919. I will be attempting "A visit to the city of Verdun" on page 31 as I will the " Visit to the Battlefield" on page 57. I will be attempting to compare the visits in the book with what we will actually find. So will give an update next year. Next to this book I will be using Walking Verdun by Christana Holstein and the walking tours that she provides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Postwar Michelin guide to one of the Great War's bloodiest and most concentrated battlefields, 25 Aug 2010

This review is from: Verdun And The Battles For Its Possession An Illustrated Guide To The Battlefields 1914-1918. (Battle for Possession) (Paperback)
The great German assault on Verdun opened on 21 February 1916 and the battle went on with furious attacks and counterattacks till it finally petered out on 18 December, ten months later, some two and a half months longer than the British offensives of the Somme and Third Ypres combined. After describing the origins and conduct of the battle with maps and illustrations the book takes us on a tour of the town and of various parts of the battlefield with its numerous forts. There are two itineraries, one visits the right bank of the Meuse, with the forts of DOuaum, ont, Vaux and Souville the other the left bank and the bloody and sinisterly named hill called the `Mort Homme' ("dead Man'). The Verdun battlefield still has today a sombre, even eerie atmosphere where no birds seem to sing. Casualty figures differ widely, but the French Official History gives 377,000 French casualties while the German figure is 337,000.
