5.0 out of 5 stars Smashing walk/cycle routes, 13 April 2010
This review is from: Walking London's Docks, Rivers and Canals (Globetrotter Walking Guides) (Paperback)
This guide is ultimately informative but delivered at just the right level of detail any walker or cyclist would require to be able to dip into en route.

The routes themselves are expertly chosen, packed with an array of sights, sounds, smells, people, parks, history, ecology, architecture, landscape and vistas that wow one's mind.

Extremely recommended if you want to experience London's quirky waterside wonders at your chosen leisurely pace (have your camera at hand!).

11 out of 10 stars for a top quality 'guidebook'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but slightly over priced, 22 Aug. 2008

This is a nice book. Clear instructions and nice, simple diagrams.

Its a little bit too expensive at full price. Keep an eye out for a big discount from Amazon.

If you like walks and live in or around London, it's worth a look.

I'm so pleased with my new book of walks. I enjoy walking beside the River Thames and London's other waterways, and have tried several others on the subject. Gilly Cameron-Cooper runs a walking holiday business on Naxos when not in London, and it shows. Each walk includes descriptions of waterway history, transport and wildlife - truly beautiful photos and detailed paintings of flowers, trees and living things to be found on your way. The style is really vibrant and makes everything interesting.

The book is strong on route maps, refreshments, toilets and supplementary information on museums etc. It warns when the walks become lonely or challenging.

Also, every walk ends at a railway or tube station. Many's the time, when following the walks in similar books, I've got hopelessly lost in what the author blithely described as 'a short walk through Gabriel's Wharf to so-and-so station'. This book takes the trouble to finish as well as it starts.

Suitable for anyone who can follow a very simple map and walk a minimum of 2.5 miles. The book's cover is durable and wipeable, very suitable for a walker's haversack. Clear font and layout, plus excellent illustrations make this book useful for those with a visual disability.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walking by London's Canals, 12 Jan. 2014

This review is from: Walking London's Docks, Rivers and Canals (Globetrotter Walking Guides) (Paperback)
This was a gift and was the most interesting book I could find on the subject. Seems to be currently out of print but the copy received although not new, was in perfect condition and arrived fairly promptly. This book has lots of good walks of varying lengths with plenty of background knowledge. I didn't get a chance to read it all through but I understand it was very well-received.

A fascinating insight into the waterways of London. A good balance of walk guidance and background information. I can recommend this as an excellent guide to the waterways.
