Two nice features about this book set it apart from the rest of the gardening books that I have read so far:
1) an in-depth explanation about how to get rid of weeds on your new plot
2) a month-by-month list of jobs to do, which I liked more than others I have seen (though it is not as exhaustive as I would like)
It also had a nice garden plan and a good section on fruit.
Still, it loses a star for hinting at things and leaving the reader hungry for detail; Using examples rather than lists. 'Other reasons for fertilizing are when your plants need a boost-hungry ones like tomatos...' Ok, but who else is hungry? *I* have no idea!
Overall, a book worth buying if you're starting out to create a kitchen garden.

This is a brilliant book. I have been growing fruit and veg on my allotment for a couple of years now and this book has really helped me. I have plenty of heavyweight gardening manuals and guides, but this is my first point of call whenever I have a problem or question about what to do next. It covers all of the basics and a bit more without going into too much depth. Nine times out of ten it has all the info I need. It is well laid out and is full of useful information and practical advice.
If you are interested in growing your own food, but don't know where to start, or if you are an old hand but want an easy to read reference book that doesn't weigh in at 4 tonnes, then this is the book for you

I agree entirely with the two reviews here. I won't bother repeating the same things they have said but just add one new point:
The thing I particularly like about this book is the section that is split into months - a 'chapter' for each month. This tells you all the things you should be doing that month including the preparations you should be making for planting, sewing, etc., in the following months. The information is clear, well put, and to the point.

It really is a great book. In my house there are several gardening books, but this is the one that I look to first - and it is usually the only one I need to look at too.

I have quite a number of books on allotment and vegetable gardening from the technical to the anecdotal. This is the one I refer to for planning and planting on a day to day basis.

Being new allotment holders but not new to gardening, we wanted a book that covered more than just the basics and this was a good choice. We've read the first few chapters on clearing the plot and other topics and have then used it as a reference book - dipping in & out as we need advice! The comprehensive index is very useful for finding the right ibformation quickly. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for sound comprehensive advice on allotmenting.

Heading into retirement, an allotment can be daunting. Read this book first and if you stop and think before digging, plan and do a bit at a time, it all makes sense and comes together, with the rewards of wholesome fresh food.

The book arrived promptly and well packaged, with correct postage pre-paid. The explanations and examples are well done for even the novice, me, to understand. I've just got my first allotment and this explained all that I could plant and grow. The equipment required was also explained. It also guided me as to what additional equipment I needed, cloches, sticks for vertical growing and containers and pots etc.. It also included information to ensure I got the best from my plot with tips on propagation, soil conditioning and weed control.

Great quality used book from seller.
We are totally new to our allotment and this has given us a really good start. We are clearing the site first and getting rid of all the weeds, levelling etc so we have missed the best time to start but we will be ready soon!
Best bits are the month by month guide and the example allotment plan and rotation guide. We will be following this to the letter!
