5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful and informative read
Martin Wainwright's short book on the English village is an easy but very enjoyable and exceptionally informative read. The brief is to explore the validity of what is best summed up in Simon Jenkins assertion that the English imagine that, 'an English village is like a medieval monastery, a place apart, yet blessed with an innate goodness that trickles down to the rest...

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I live in a village so this book should have been right up my street or country lane. I have read and reread parts of the book trying to suck up the dry dusty facts and turn them into something I can recognise and enjoy; a living place that people dwell in. In this book It just doesn't happen. There are plenty of interesting little details and facts about villages, but...

beautifully written vignettes of the English village and its social life; delightful as a Sunday afternoon read in front of the fire or in the garden, or perhaps last thing at night after a gruelling day in the office when it's good to be reminded that there are other ways of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars The English Village, 13 Nov. 2011

This is a really enjoyable read. Apparently easy going enough but with plenty to think about. For anyone with any interest at all in the history of English life or anyone with a love of the English countryside this book is required reading. In its hundred and eighty pages the author has captured the essence of village life in this country. Here are stories about village socirty, history, topography, architecture, archaeology, religion, crime, love and despair. Every page seems to have something interesting to say. Here is something for everyone.
Some of the facts seemed jaw-dropping. A feast in 1465 for the elevation of George Neville to Archbishop of York saw 600,000 pints of beer providedfor the occasion! At Eyam in Derbyshire in 1666 the residents voluntarily agreed to quarantine themselves when the plague arrived.
The tendency to look at village life through rose-tinted spectacles is sharply disabused by stories of some of the work done. Being out in the fields all day in hot sunshine or pouring rain, bent over, hands calloused, backs straining. Village life for many has always been hard, a struggle to make ends
meet and a willingness to `multi-task`. The author documents it all fairly and succinctly . This book is really a taster, something to encourage further investigation and appreciation. The bibliography is a useful first step in that direction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pocket-sized guide to quintessential England, 13 Nov. 2011

This guide to the English Village would make an ideal gift for a townie or visitor to England just before they drive off into our rural byways. Divided neatly into 10 chapters, each section conveys a sense of the traditions and formation of the features of a typical english village. The Village green, the pub, the church and the big house are all here. I particularly enjoyed the section on the big house - the legacy of manor houses has been frequently undervalued and Wainwright makes us understand what they contributed and underlines the appeal of such series as Downton Abbey or Cranford.

Simplistic black and white woodcuts serve as illustrations - colour illustrations would have helped bring the text to life (my only quibble). This is more of a general guide than an in-depth examination, but it packs a lot of information into a small space.

If you live in a village or think you might like to - and who wouldn't who doesn't - this will affirm your desires or why you chose village life in the first place. A pretty book in a lovely format.
