2.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Vague, 12 Dec 2003
This review is from: Catchphrase, Slogan and Cliche (Paperback)
This book tries to explain the history of phrases used in the English language, but I felt it missed out too many commonly used expressions Eg. "Ship shape and Bristol fashion' or "A1" does not get a mention, despite being fairly commonly used.
Also, a lot of the ones listed were not really commonly used phrases or expressions eg. "I counted them all out and I counted them all back" is listed, and rightly accredited to Brian Hanrahan's report on the Falklands conflict, but it is not really a phrase or expression that is regulary used.
I appreciate that the author must have had a hard job compiling the book, as everyones' favourite expressions will be different, but I was dissapointed.
