This review is from: Good Practice in Safeguarding Children: Working Effectively in Child Protection (Paperback)
Good practice in safeguarding children is a very informative yet manageable book that provides concise and relevant reflections on law, social policy and research in a number of areas. It is laid out with explanatory paragraphs, good practice points, examples, case studies and tasks; thus making it practical and interesting. There are ALOT of citations and full references are usefully provided at the end of each chapter.

The book consists of 14 chapters including:
1. Introduction
2. From protection to safeguarding: bringing you up to date on statutory responsibilities
3. The contribution of schools to safeguarding children
4. Making the most of the home visit
5. Infant mental health and early attachment
6. Working with un-cooperative or hostile families
7. Neglect and parental disability
8. Safeguarding children who live with parental substance misuse
9. Domestic abuse and safeguarding children
10. Safeguarding trafficked children
11. Criminal investigation and safeguarding: dilemmas for policing
12. Good practice in undertaking social work assessments
13. The most important professional relationship
14. Doing serious case reviews well

This book would make an excellent core text and I would reccommend reading it!

I took this book on loan yesterday from my University Library and have found it an excellent read. It is informative and clear in its delivery of information. For students with a tight budget for books this is an excellent investment and addition to any personal library that will be a vital tool in practice, post graduation.

This is a very useful and readable addition to anyones library, that deal with children in the course of their professional role. It clearly outlines what is best practice in Safeguarding and how this works in the field. I would recommend this book to health & care professionals, to foster & adoption agencies and to all university students studying social work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful book., 9 Feb 2011
This review is from: Good Practice in Safeguarding Children: Working Effectively in Child Protection (Paperback)
Really good read - very informative and easy to follow.
Good chapters and easy to dip into when you're on a bus between visits.

Its got some good prompts and thoughts on key areas such as parents and substance misuse and resistant families. Not total rocket science but well written and set out to make you think about ways to approach your cases.

I would definately recommend this book to SW students in front line placements and Social Workers in child protection and similar teams.

Not an easy subject to read around but the author has made it as easy as they could. Good if you are studying around this subject at Uni/College or work in the area of Child Protection. I highly recommend it.
