5.0 out of 5 stars do the right thing and be happy doing it!, 29 Jun. 2001
This review is from: Innervation: Redesign Yourself for a Smarter Future (Paperback)
The first time I've ever picked up a business book and found myself quoting snippets at colleagues and friends. And apologies to the poor commuter who had to put up with me sniggering on the train every morning last week. This book is hilarious and Browning gets it so, so right. Of course the really, really useful stuff at the core of this book is a manual for personal creativity, but it's just surrounded by some of the most insightful, practical and entertaining advice about getting on with leading yourself and others that I've ever read. I also like the the book's positive approach to personal values and integrity.
The book's divided into broad sections on being, thinking and doing, but all the while you'll be laughing while you learn. I'll certainly never think of Jack Welch or a jellyfish in quite the same way again.
A manifesto for an honest, creative and enjoyable career in business. The section on "how to say what you have to say on one sheet of A4" is worth the cover price alone, and if nothing else you'll finish with a stack of new jokes about bosses.

5.0 out of 5 stars It does exactly what it says on the jacket, 1 Jun. 2001
This review is from: Innervation: Redesign Yourself for a Smarter Future (Paperback)
Most grey and yellow matt covered, management books are byhumourless netnerd's with square glasses, anti establishemnt stubble, and plenty of edgy but boring platidude. Then I saw the name Guy Browning. Author of the hilarious "Office Politics", in the Guardian and "Managemnt Today's" "Weak at the Top" column, Browning is a one man league against the tedium of much management writing.
He has done nothing less than write a management guide for grown ups, for people with real jobs and responsibilities, real workplace anxieties and conflicts. Its pitched perfectly for most managemnt roles, avoiding the elitist assumption of many writers, and appicable to any organisation or level. I have one niggling criticism he is rather too fond of "Neutron Jack" Welch and his rather brutal epigrams. Browning takes us through the opportunities and threats of the new economy without succumbing to the ludicrous optimnism of Handy and Peters, or the downbeat doom mongering of Rifkin. It's irreverent but not irrelevant, funny but definitely not facile and visionary without vacuity. Yet it is not in the least bit cynical. The book is a brilliant guide to thinking about managing whilst avoiding managemnt think. Like Henry Mintzberg another management writer with a soul and a sense of humour, Browning is incapable of being boring, and loves the subject as much as he loves putting us straight on much of the nonsense which characterises the field. There are some amazing insights. The chapter on innovation and thought, on thinking outside the box, on meetings, are all gems. Read it from cover to cover and pass it on. If the rest of this admirable series, is halfway as well written, then I will gladly become a devotee of these Gurus. When these books get better known then I and the other reviewers can feel smug about indentifying the next big trend in mananagment writing...mangement writing you can read that makes you think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top tips for a nicer life, 10 July 2001

This review is from: Innervation: Redesign Yourself for a Smarter Future (Paperback)
A terrific book that you can read in a sitting and will find yourself quoting to unsuspecting friends and colleagues. The humour is sharp and ever-present, leavening what can sometimes be rather earnest sort-your-life-out material. There is also great humanity and common sense throughout. Inspiring stuff. Ignore the daft title and dive right in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes personal development a pleasure. A fun read!, 30 May 2001

This review is from: Innervation: Redesign Yourself for a Smarter Future (Paperback)
This book is super - I've never enjoyed a business book so much! Chapter headings like Never hit a jellyfish with a spade; Teams are for fantasy football and Don't leave creativity to the accountants. Every so often I have read an "improve your working life/manage better and smarter" type of book and I get as far as chapter three. I happened to pick up Innervation from a shop display, thought it looked as different inside as outside, read it on the tube home and didn't stop til I'd finished. It is full of really good advice and yet its a light and humorous read. And it makes you feel good about yourself because it encourages you to improve yourself, balance work and home lives, and you don't have to be a Nasty Nick. There's helpful quotes [I like 'Imagination is more powerful than knowledge' - Einstein] and funny soundbites, hometruths and amusing diversions ["Happiness is like a scooter; once you're up and running you can just scoot along. It's getting up in the first place that's the tricky bit."] And I loved the emergency de-glumming programme! The fun stuff is mixed in with all the wide-ranging sound advice from 'Underpromise and overdeliver' & the common-sense 'if you're in a team, let the rest of the team members do their jobs'. The book's split into three sections on being, thinking and doing, and I found the thinking section particularly new, interesting and useful as there are several techniques for thinking "outside the box". These can be applied to anything, making you question your assumptions and so open up your options - the world is your lobster. But the book is realistic and works within constraints of time, cost, personnel and technology. There'll always be a b*****d in the office to contend with but Browning gives some hints on managing them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes you laugh, Makes you think, Makes you laugh again, 1 Jun. 2001

Life needn't be as complicated as we make it. Reading this book makes you realise that with a little direction and a bit more application you can make huge strides in shaping your life and your work as to how you want to make them. Not only that but it's got some great gags in it. Take it on a train, on holiday, have a laugh and pick up some great life tips along the way. Afterall as some one once said, 'You might as well enjoy the time that you're living as you're a long time dead' (probably Jack Welch)

Witty, intelligent, funny. There's very little I can add that hasn't been said already in earlier reviews. This is an excellent book that I only picked up to flick through. It became my pick-it-up-at-every-opportunity book. If I could have written a book, I'd have wanted it to be this one. I will definitely be buying this for a couple of people for Christmas.
