This review is from: Is There a Conflict Between Science and Christianity? (Hardcover)
Nicky Gumbel's booklet "Is there a conflict between Science and Christianity?" is 27 pages long and has 20 endnotes and 2 illustrations. It attempts to show that trust in science and faith in Christ are not incompatible. This is done first by dispelling some of the caricatures of the Church as being anti-intellectual. Then Gumbel highlights famous scientists like Newton, Copernicus, Faraday, Boyle, etc, who had a strong belief in the Bible and Christ. A few observations are made about the issue of miracles. Quite a few pages are devoted to examining biological evolution and showing how it complements the book of Genesis, followed by some philosophical points about what evidence can and cannot show. Final remarks are made about the limits of science. There is a healthy and balanced recognition that "We need science and scientists. Our civilization owes a great deal to their work. But more than that we need Christianity and we need Jesus Christ." For such a short booklet, numerous ideas are touched upon which will be sure to stimulate discussion and thought. It is clearly meant to be a very cursory introduction to believers and non-believers alike who have never thought systematically about the topic. Drawbacks include a choppy flow from topic to topic that makes the booklet appear as a long ramble, rather than a systematic analysis. There is also an asymmetry in that some important topics only receive a few remarks (e.g. miracles) while others receive several pages worth (e.g. Genesis and evolution). Only two suggested further readings are given; however, it would have been wiser to suggest several books to the reader in each of the "beginner", "intermediate", and "advanced" categories. As a Ph.D. in Engineering, I found the booklet worth reading and have given out a few to people in my sphere of influence in order to stimulate more in-depth thought and dialogue.
