4.0 out of 5 stars Great Little book
Anyone starting out with a pet tortoise would benefit from reading this book. It gives a lot of detail about different breeds of tortoise. It is a very easy book to read with loads of photos, it is laid out well and in a logical manner. It starts with different breeds and what their natural habitats are like, how to choose a healthy tortoise and how to tell what sex it...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good
A book with lots of information about tortoises. I wished it could be a bit more basic eg a list of foods tortoises eat, instead of 'they eat leaves and herbs'. Yes which ones?!! But generally good.

Anyone starting out with a pet tortoise would benefit from reading this book. It gives a lot of detail about different breeds of tortoise. It is a very easy book to read with loads of photos, it is laid out well and in a logical manner. It starts with different breeds and what their natural habitats are like, how to choose a healthy tortoise and how to tell what sex it is. It then goes on to discuss outdoor housing and the need to make it secure and tortoise friendly.
It then illustrates how to house them in an indoors environment, the importance of warmth, humidity and most important the correct diet. A few tips on hibernation, both indoor and outdoor, will put most peoples mind at rest and these are well addressed as is waking up from hibernation as well.
There are a couple of pages on tortoise breeding, which is very interesting, though further information would be needed for a beginner.
All in all this is a very good book for anyone wanting the best for their pet. It is written by two leaders in the field of tortoise husbandry. It is meticulously referenced and for the price represents excellent value for money.
You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great beginner book, 7 May 2012

Great book with general tortoise advice. Would advise anyone thinking of getting a tortoise to read this. However the downside is that it gives very general advice on all species of tortoise so there isn't room in there for more detailed advice on individual species of tortoise. If you wanted more detailed advice another book would be better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for new tortoise owners, 20 Mar 2014
By

This is a great book for new tortoise owners. Written in really clear and simple language it sets out the absolute basics of purchasing/rehoming a tortoise, how to set up a basic enclosure and essential health and welfare issues.

Some elements may be too difficult for a child, but for adults i think it is a "must have" to ensure that your new pet has the essential care it needs.

Tortoises, their needs and welfare are often mis-understood. With a lot of mis-information on websites, this book will get you started on the right path.
