5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable - a Must Buy, 3 Dec. 2010
This review is from: Kate Walker's 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance (Aber Writers Guides) (Paperback)
This is an invaluable book. Actually, as Kate explains at the outset it is more than a `guide'. It is a whole learning programme packed neatly into a manageable size book. Pick up and put down at will.
The book addresses the various ingredients or elements which make up a story. I feel that many of the disciplines which Kate includes in her guide are applicable in general to other genres of writing.
Of great interest and value is the section on practicalities from an editorial & publisher's viewpoint which cover such things as word count (a different calculation method in USvUK), synopsis, query letter etc.
Each chapter concentrates on one theme ending with a series of searching questions for self-reflection followed by some excersises. A couple of lines to make notes and jot down thoughts before expanding later would have enhanced this section. However this is a minor point and does not detract from the excellence of the book. I found the sections which describe the various elements of different lines of published Romance very helpful as were insights into other author's experiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance from the Paradise in the Pacific, 7 April 2011
This review is from: Kate Walker's 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance (Aber Writers Guides) (Paperback)
Kate Walker's 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance (Aber Writers Guides)

Kate Walker has been a successful romance writer for the last twenty five years. So she is a fountain of information regarding category romance.

Kate Walker's 12-POINT GUIDE to WRITING ROMANCE is perfect for writers who are targeting Harlequin Mills and Boon. However, its teachings are great for any romance writer, regardless of which publisher they are planning to submit their work to. The topics covered in it could be applied to any romance novel and sub-genre.

And the KATE WALKER'S 12 POINT GUIDE TO WRITING ROMANCE is a tremendous writer's tool to have. It's separate Chapters are so much help. There's a chapter on :
Focus
Sensuality
Passion
Characterisation and Heroines
Plotting
The Intense Black Moment
Emotion
Conflict
Dialogue and the
A Beleivable Happy Ending among some others.

It's a great help to aspiring writers who can't be present in her workshops.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the cover, 16 Mar. 2011
This review is from: Kate Walker's 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance (Aber Writers Guides) (Paperback)
I was glued to this honest and generous guidebook - and now after reading it I feel all fired up to write that first publishable romance! What I liked is the total lack of ego dripping off the pages, there's no other agenda than the one it says on the cover. Kate pushes you to find your niche, hone your technical skills and be true to your writing self. Her tone assures you that eventual success is not necessarily a fairy tale... There are interviews with established authors at the end of the book which is an inspirational way to finish. It humanises the industry and makes me want to go out and read some of those authors too. On a slightly negative note, I was surprised at the number of typos and editorial mistakes, ironic in such a book. Also, I would have liked just a few more examples of writing to demonstrate this elusive concept of "voice". But overall, it gets my 5 because I haven't read a better guide to writing romance and somehow doubt I will.

This book was a real eye-opener and I feel I learned a lot from it. Although it seems mainly aimed at writing for Mills and Boon it had a lot of useful information for writers of other romance fiction too. I think the characterization checklist is brilliant and I will be using it myself. The twelve questions at the end of each chapter were also really helpful. All in all I think this is a must-read for anyone who wants to write romantic fiction.
