I received this yesterday, so I've only had a few hours to dip into it so far. It's a handsome volume, well illustrated and nicely presented. It's a fun read - however, I've already stumbled on a few errors, which makes me wonder just how accurate the entries actually are. Firstly, on page 132, under the entry P.D.Q., the quotation is attributed to "Philip Marlowe telling his secretary how to pick up the Black Bird in the film The Maltese Falcon". Even a real bright 3rd grader knows that the gumshoe in Falcon is Sam Spade - not Marlowe. Also Hammett related is the entry on "gunsel", which is defined here as being a term for a "young person" or "punk", which was eventually used to refer generally to a tough guy or gunman. This is sort of correct, but it's been accepted for years that the original meaning was basically synonymous with "rent boy". The implication in the the novel The Maltese Falcon is that Gutman and Wilmer are lovers. Also, the 1958 Robert Mitchum movie "Thunder Road" is conflated with the the William Campbell Gault novel of the same name. However, despite sharing a title and a Hot Rod motif, the movie and book are unrelated. The first is about hillbilly moonshiners, while the novel is about the career of a young racing driver.

Still, these gripes aside, this book is pure silk man! Check it out!
