4.0 out of 5 stars A great overview of Studio Ghibli's history, 17 April 2009
This review is from: Studio Ghibli: The Films of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. It was very insightful, giving each and every project the two animation masters ever worked on a well-deserved mention and, at least for the most popular ones, a pretty thoughtful analysis. The writing itself was vivid and interesting to read.

As an introduction to the studio it is a great place to start, other than the movies themselves. If you're already a big Ghibli fan, as I am, you might not discover much new information, but it's still a great buy as it's a very convenient overview. I would have liked it if there were a bit more pictures, there were only some in the middle of the book, but all in all this was a solid release.

Highly recommended for any Ghibli fan, or fans of great animated films in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Ghibli fans, 8 Jan 2010

This review is from: Studio Ghibli: The Films of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata (Paperback)
I am a Ghibli fan, so I decided to purchase this book without references about whether it's good or not.
And I love it! You find here some essays about the Ghibli films, academic but easy for reading, which gives a wonderful point of view of the films. Besides it offers a lot of information of the career of Miyazaki and Takahata before creating Studio Ghibli, the films and series they made and all that.
If you love Studio Ghibli, you will love this book.

The currently shipped edition is an updated 2010 version which now includes Ponyo and a full colour centre section with photos from The Castle of Cagliostro Goshu the Cellist and up to Ponyo again. So all in all a great buy if you are looking for an easy to read very informative overview of Studio Ghibli the people involved and their prior history.

4.0 out of 5 stars Film Studies Students: Buy it!, 6 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Studio Ghibli: The Films of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata (Paperback)
This book is great for the readers it was meant to attract. For general fans of Ghibli it is a gateway into appreciating the films even more and for film studies students it gives you enough info for any essay or presentation. However if you're expecting a truck load of information about specific things then this won't satisfy you (For example: it tells you that Miyazaki and Takahata worked on the first Lupin III TV series; It doesn't tell you that the first director was fired after being asked to change some things).

5.0 out of 5 stars Customer review, 26 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A succinct history of Studio Ghibli and it's roots, coupled with an insightful look into both the studio's movies and it's founder's early works. Written by a fan, to be read by fans, this is an interesting read for anyone close to the works of Studio Ghibli and is certainly worth reading.
