5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - and surprisingly good illustrations!
This is a great book about a great story - the long and tragic confrontation between two powerful (and very talented) Japanese warlords in XVI century - Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenjin.

This story was described many times - in the great novel by Eiji Yoshikawa ("Taiko"), in a great samurai movie ("Samurai banners" starring Toshiro Mifune) and it is a distant...

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay book
Book is okay to read...does get tedious in parts.

For once Christa Hook could paint! Must have had her glasses on for a change...

To expensive for what you get!

This is a great book about a great story - the long and tragic confrontation between two powerful (and very talented) Japanese warlords in XVI century - Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenjin.

This story was described many times - in the great novel by Eiji Yoshikawa ("Taiko"), in a great samurai movie ("Samurai banners" starring Toshiro Mifune) and it is a distant background to the immortal masterpiece of Kurosawa, "Kagemusha". Other than that, I am not revealing you anything - this story is almost too good to be true (and nevertheless it is!) and you desserve to be surprised by the developments.

Another good surprise (a miracle?) - three colour plates by Christa Hook, and guess what? They are REALLY good! Great Scot, if only she could do all her artwork like this one...

Conclusion - a great and passionating book, for a modest price. Not one page was wasted. Get it and enjoy it!

The perfect companion for all history buffs is THE ROMA VICTRIX WINE BEAKERCalix Imperium, Roma Victrix Pewter wine beaker

Another great offering from Osprey with an excellent informative and lively narrative. Considering the length of the booklet the author has packed in an enormous amount of information.

The very informative text is backed up with superb artwork, illustrations, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Go-To Source for Uesugi vs Takeda!, 27 Jun. 2010
This review is from: Kawanakajima 1553-64: Samurai Power Struggle (Osprey Campaign) (Paperback)
Stephen Turnbull really knows he stuff when it comes to the Sengoku-Jidai. I recently used this book to complete a dissertation of mine and it is a truly fabulous way of finding out about the battles of Kawanakajima. Information is laid out cohesively and clearly with lovely illustrations that bring the history to life.
I found the photos especially helpful, as you could go to the modern prefecture and know where the battles actually took place, or at least see how Japan has modernised since the 16th Century.

This book is fantastic if you don't know Japanese, as it does not bombard the reader with Japanese lexis.

A must have for any Sengoku samurai fanatic!
