5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction, 31 Mar 2003
This review is from: The Franco-Prussian War 1870-1871: 51 (Essential Histories) (Paperback)
I have been reading and studying Imperial Germany for a little while now, and I wanted a concise and interesting book about the Franco-Prussian War. This book from Essential Histories was perfect. It was managable, with lots of pictures of paintings and wood engravings from the time, and also diagrams describing the movements in major battles, such as Gravelotte St Privat and Sedan. It also had a helpful bibliography, index and chronology. Its a great stepping stone- I now have been spurred on by the book to read a book on the subject by Michael Howard. In the classroom or office, I reccomend it to anyone with a taste for good history and good books.

This review is from: The Franco-Prussian War 1870-1871: 51 (Essential Histories) (Paperback)
This account of the Franco Prussian war illustrates the area which Osprey has made its own. The slim volume is a clear and concise account of this swift campaign which left France defeat and the German state fully established. Aside from the historical chronicle of events there are insights into the two opposing armies and the affect the rigours of the mostly winter campaign had upon the men and respective war machines. There are also interesting accounts concerning individuals including William Howard Russell and (in more detail) Scotsman Archibald Forbes, pioneer newspaper war correspondents. Adding depth to the narrative are contemporary photographs, paintings, cartoons and prints; also some very useful maps of initial deployments and the principal battles. To make room for this wealth of information Osprey did not include an trademark illustrations by its own artists, which fits nicely into the 'Essential History' format.
I am sure there are more detailed and authoritative works on the subject, but this is a superb introduction to the subject. Or simply the volume to have if you only have a passing interest in the subject.
