The only travel guide exclusively on North Korea at the moment. LP and others include the North as an appended section in books on Korea, on which the focus is predominantly the South. This is detailed, long on words and short on pictures; and in conjunction with other relevant reading on North Korea can give one a good grounding before departure. Bear in mind this is in the process of a third edition and although not much may have changed, you may want to wait until that is due out in August.

4.0 out of 5 stars It was great to have a guidebook for North Korea, 25 Sep 2014
This review is from: North Korea (Bradt Travel Guides) (Paperback)
It was great to have a guidebook for North Korea. The problem was that they confiscated the book at the border control. This literature was not allowed in DPRK. Got it back though when leaving the country. They were very polite and correct.

This book is an essential for any visitor to North Korea whether they be a tourist or on a business trip. The layout is very similar tothe 2003 edition with some sections being virtually unchanged. After dealing with the capital 9 areas of the country are given adetailed description-the ones on the border areas are excellent.Wher this book falls down are a)the offwhite colour of the paper withthe small type which makes it difficult to read and b)the small and minimal pictures.North Korea is a very picturesque which deserves better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very extensive good overview, 8 Aug 2011

This book is definitely the best travel guide on North Korea available. Even having phone numbers of several hotels. I fully agree with the earlier mentioned reviews.

A perfect companion for our forthcoming trip. I gleaned a great deal of information in particular how to behave, and the rules for giving gifts and tips.

4.0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and informative, 25 Nov 2008

I picked this book up as I wanted an expert and unbiased view about a country which always seems to get a bad press, but which not many people seems to know that much about. I found the book really well written and researched, proving that North Korea definitely has something to offer those who are open minded enough to consider going there. However, I feel that the poor quality of the actual book itself, being printed as it is on poor quality paper, does let it down. It's a shame too, that there aren't more photos - although there are some brilliant illustrations throughout. Also, I'm too sure about the cover photo, because it doesn't really seem that it's anything unique to N Korea, but that is just a personal gripe.

I'd definitely recommend this guide to anyone who genuinely wants to know more about the real North Korea.
