5.0 out of 5 stars Wolfblade Trilogy, 12 Sep 2009

This review is from: Warlord: Wolfblade trilogy Book Three (Paperback)
This trilogy is a great set of novels that spans some forty years or so in the lives of the ruling classes of a land named Hythria.

I know there are a lot of guys out there who are a bit wary of reading fantasy books written by women. You're losing out on a lot guys! Jennifer Fallon pulls no punches in these books. Okay so yes there is love in these books but name me one where it ain't! There are thieves, slaves, courtesans, lovers, several counts of fratricide and plotted regicide that form the bones of the trilogy. The depth of the power struggles are broad and range across the years without the story ever getting bogged down in detail.

The characters are all very well formed having a surprising psychological depth which again does not slow the story down. Marla Wolfblade is the central character in book one (Wolfblade) and on her shoulders alone rests the fate of the country and her as yet unborn children. She grows from a pampered innocent into one of the hardest unyielding characters I have ever read about.

Do yourself a favour and buy the entire set. There's no point in buying just one!

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant, 3 Jan 2011
This review is from: Warlord: Wolfblade trilogy Book Three (Paperback)
The final book of the wolfblade trilogy, this book is a brilliant read. I won't go into the story because you get that from the synopsis, needless to say that all the loose ends get tied. By the time you get to this book you really have a relationship with the characters thanks to the effort put into to building the stories of this large cast. I've re-read this series, without skipping any parts because it isn't bogged down with technical detail, there's exactly enough to allow your imagination to paint the landscape of the story. Personally, I don't need to know how the sword is made, or how the sword is used, I'm far more interested in the person who wields it, and their interplay with those around them. This book has that in abundance, but its by no means a lovely fluffy, huggy book. It tells a story of one families struggle for survival and what they are prepared to do and sacrifice for that survival. If you're looking for a love story in this series, don't bother, but if once you've read this series and want more (and a little bit of romance too) then read the Harshini trilogy. I recommend this book. One of my favourite writers, and as a massive fan of Iain M Banks, Douglas Adams, and Tolkien, I think Fallon is up there with the best

5.0 out of 5 stars A little bit Games of Thronesy ..., 20 Nov 2013

This review is from: Warlord: Wolfblade trilogy Book Three (Paperback)
This has to be one of the best trilogies I have encountered. It is fascinating to watch the main characters grow and find their feet, particularly Marla. The final book has been well written, as almost every stone is not left unturned.Very strategically and wittily written. It is good to read another strong female writers work!

Fallon is a force to be reckoned with. The wit, plotting, great writing technique, twists, and turns in this book (and the rest of the series) provide for a nail biting reading experience.
