5.0 out of 5 stars A deep and thoughtful book.
"Stargirl", by Jerry Spinelli, is a very touching story about a girl who dared to be different. She had a different kind of name (Stargirl), she wore a different kind of clothes, she brought a ukelele and a pet rat to school, but what really set her apart was that she cared. More than anything, she cared about the people around her.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stargirl Pink
Bought this for my daughter, but mum [and dad!] both really enjoyed it as well.

VERY disappointed to find that the copy we were supplied by Amazon was incomplete [it ended in mid-sentence on page 191].

We contacted Amazon about this and after a lengthy delay they told us that all their stock had the same problem.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting..., 30 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Girl (Hardcover)
This is the story of an outsider. Stargirl, like so many other outsiders, is admired for her uniquness and orginality, and celebrated for it for the first few weeks as a student at a highschool in Arizona. Then, the tides turn, and people become predjudiced against her, and Stargirl discovers that she gets the whole package if she is an outsider. She is shunned by the entire school save for one person, who encourages her to conform and be like everyone else. Little does he know that this will cause even more disaster and trauma for Stargirl in the end. This story turns out relatively happy, although it leaves you with a sad feeling, and wishing there was more. It's a very short book, and a fairly easy read, but the author could have put more effort into it.

1.0 out of 5 stars That Stargirl is Strange!, 18 Nov 2002

This review is from: Stargirl: Stargirl (Black Apple) (Paperback)
I did not get this book at all. I can see where the idea came from: people who are different are not bad and shouldn't need to change to be accepted. However, this book took it to bizarre extremes (letting her rat come to school, playing the Ukulele and stalking the kid across the road) which just spoilt it and made the characters silly. Some of the writing was beautifully concocted but the actions of the characters were laughable. Read "Blubber" by Judy Blume instead for a better story on fitting in.
