This review is from: A Brief History of 1917: Russia's Year of Revolution (Paperback)
Having studied Russian history at degree level a few years ago I was intrigued to come across a book on the revolution written by a journalist that emcompased eye witness testimonies, and encouraged by the positive reviews I gave it a go. It was refreshing to read an account on the 1917 revolution that was clear, concise and easy to read and understand.

What impresssed me the most about the book was its balanced approach. Comments such as "the whole Boleshevik clan were a bunch of very evil men" appear next to " Bolsheviks taking power... I worked hard and the system worked for me." Roy Bainton simply reports the events and relays experiences of those who lived through the revolution and those that grew up in the aftermath under Lenin and Stalin. The eye witness testimonies, of which there are plenty, help to bring the events to life, making this book much more than a chronology.

I would recommnend this book to anyone looking to learn more about the events of 1917, whether at school or not. The helpful A-Z of political parties and influential participants provides additional information that could lead to further reading for anyone interested in taking a deeper look into events that would change the political landscape of a country beyond recognition.
