5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for law applicants..., 6 Jun 2009
By
This review is from: What About Law? (Paperback)
I used Glanville Williams when I applied for law - luckily its dryness didn't put me off! It's useful as a basic mini reference book for those starting law, but this book is the one to read if you are wondering whether to study law or wanting to know what it'll actually be like. Written by three very good teachers as well as academics.

If you want to go into more debate about law (politics, civil liberties) try 'Just Law' by Helena Kennedy. What About Law? is the book for a realistic, informative, engaging guide to the subjects you'd study in a law degree.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, 16 Sep 2008

This book gives a great idea of what it is like to study law. Each of the chapters offers a rather comprehensive account of what the seven key areas of law are like to study. The only drawback is this book's tendancy to get very slightly dense at times, referring to concepts and ideas that have only been introduced a page before, or to some that haven't been mentioned for several chapters!

However, overall this book really is excellent. If you are looking for an insight into what studying the law really involves, look no further.

I found this book engaging and interesting. It provides a good insight into the basis of Law and thus gives the reader a good indication as to whether or not they are interested in the field and would enjoy studying it at university.

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good place to start thinking about law, 3 April 2008

This book is an excellent way to get a taste for what it is like to study law at degree level. It tackles all seven core subject areas giving the reader a good introduction and case study to see how that aspect of law functions. Some of the book is a little exhaustive, however you should reassure yourself that all will become clear in the classroom.

A good place to start for all prospective law students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended :D, 31 May 2011
This review is from: What About Law? (Paperback)
I used this during prep for my interviews for universities, where I'd applied for Law. It was absolutely fantastic: very easy to read, engaging, interesting and simple. It provided me with the confidence I needed to get through the rigorous selection procedure and is written by some of the most renowned legal experts, all three of whom are currently professors of Law at Cambridge University. I would definitely have to recommend this book to anyone (thinking of) applying for Law at university, or those with a general interest in Law.

Absolutely brilliant!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the subject, 18 May 2011

Contrary to what some other reviewers have opined, I actually found the content just technical enough. I will embark on a law degree this coming year, and I wanted a book written by people who know what they're doing and can give me something to sink my teeth into. This book certainly delivered.

Discussion of cases forms the mainstay of the content. This makes it a very handy introduction to law since cases are the lifeblood of the common law system. Discussion of the central matters of the various cases is interspersed with manageable pieces of theory that I found very engaging. The cases are well-selected and gripping to boot.

All in all, well worth a read for the enthusiastic prospective law applicant.

5.0 out of 5 stars very enlightening, 20 Feb 2011
This review is from: What About Law? (Paperback)
As a student who was unsure whether Law was a suitable career path or not, I feel this book was very useful in informing me. The book contains a summary of different sections of Law, but doesn't get so in depth that it becomes tedious for someone who knows nothing of Law. It is also written in a very interesting manner...so you won't get bored!
For anyone considering Law, this is a must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for background reading, 19 May 2010
This review is from: What About Law? (Paperback)
This was recommended to me for summer reading. It keeps things interesting, but also goes into enough detail to give you a head start once you start your studies. Any prospective law students out there; don't expect to be able to pass the course with it, but read it so you can start thinking about wider issues-that's what the first year's all about! Good luck :)
