5.0 out of 5 stars Childhood memories rekindled as the Mekon returns, 20 Nov 2013

This review is from: Classic Dan Dare: Marooned on Mercury (Hardcover)
This is the fourth book in the series of Dan Dare reprints from Titan Books. Dan and his friends have successfully defeated the menace of the Red Moon, but were unable to return to Earth. Instead he crash-lands on Mercury. To his horror he discovers his old nemesis the Mekon has escaped from Venus, resurfaced on Mercury and re-established his power base there.

Additional extras include an 'Introduction' by Brian May, the illustrated 'The Art of Frank Hampson', part 3 of the illustrated 'An Interview with Frank Hampson' by Alan Vince, and a 'Who's Who in Dan Dare' for those too young to have enjoyed it first time round. All the books also include a 'Checklist' of all the main Dan Dare stories, when they were published, who they were written by, and which artists were involved.

This set was originally published in Eagle from 27/6/1952 (Vol 3, no 12), to 20/2/1953 (Vol 3, no 46). The print quality and colour fidelity is mostly surprisingly good, although a few frames are showing their age, and my only remaining wish is that the pages could have been as big as the old 1950s Eagle page was. As it is older eyes need glasses to read the smaller lettering and appreciate all the superb detail of the drawing.

This is a definite trip down memory lane for the sixty-year-olds among us, and I was reminded also of many of the surrounding happenings at the time I first read these particular stories. So I found it was a very welcome Christmas present.

Generally well-produced and quality binding.
Interesting additional articles on Dan Dare.

The only real criticism is the small format, which could make it difficult for some to read the text easily.
The original comic had a substantially larger page size.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Thunderbirds Of Comics., 16 Sep 2005

Just as 'Thunderbirds' the original 60's puppet show stands out throughout the generations because of the care and attention to deetail so does Dan Dare.
These stories are full of great ideas and twists and turns and are so different from many comics of it's or any other era.
Their is so little violence and the story is carried along by invention, tension and great concepts. When fighting is needed it just adds to the whole feel of the scripts.
Do yourself a favor and get this and enjoy it because you will.
