5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the most important period in Ireland's history
An excellent overview of that all-important period in Irish history. Written in a rather informal style (none the worse for that) with comments from people who knew the main players. Highly recommended.

This review is from: Michael Collins And The Troubles: The Struggle For Irish Freedom 1912-1922 (Paperback)
The author has access to a great body of oral evidence and is clearly acquainted with the events , characters and the rich sources of historical documentation available. However there is as much description of Eamon Devalera and Griffiths for example as Michael Collins.
Collins does not really get a mention until the last quarter of the book.
While there is much narrative on Collins in the thick of the action, there is little biographical content on Collins, or analysis of his calling to the Independance movement. I felt disappointed as it was Collins I was eager to have developed as a character in the book and eager to gain greater understanding of as a man and his view of his and the movements behaviours.
The book did provide me with the information and charaters of the ostensibly Bourgeois origins of the revolutionaries, but litlle about Collins origins. Lamentably the analysis of the meeting in London with Lloyd George of the Delegates is the books biggest disappointment.
