5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Wonderful, poignant biography of a cricketer who was certainly the best slow bowler of the inter-war years and whose impact on the game is too often forgotten. A gem of a book.

3.0 out of 5 stars a grievous loss
There's no doubt English cricket suffered a grievous loss when Hedley Verity was killed in Italy. This review is from: Hedley Verity: Portrait of a Cricketer (Hardcover)
There's no doubt English cricket suffered a grievous loss when Hedley Verity was killed in Italy. I remember Hutton's tribute to him in his first book, 'Cricket is my Life' and wasn't surprised to read in Alan Hill that members of the 1954-55 team to Australia stopped off to pay their respects. But Alan Hill has trawled the archives to produce a record of Verity's playing career: thorough, if not very exciting...a few more anecdotes from those who played with him would have been welcome.

The saddest, and yet most interesting, read is Hill's account of his last days: Verity's bravery as a soldier, and his terrible bad luck that, having been initially saved, when wounded, by his men, he succumbed under surgery. Alas.
