5.0 out of 5 stars A well researched rollercoaster of a book., 16 Nov 1999
This review is from: The Red and the Black: Glory and Uncertainty at Saracens plc (Hardcover)
The overriding impression you get from reading this work is of history in the making. The authors were clearly given a great deal of opportunity to view the workings of a club in a unique sporting situation. Clearly the changes in Rugby Union over the last few years have opened the door to unprecedented developments both for the players and the officers of the clubs at the most senior level. This book gets under the skin and takes the reader through the highs and lows of a season in the life of Saracens Rugby Football Club, with a constant eye kept on the commercial aspects of success on the field. A thoroughly enjoyable and informative read from a new author (who it may be noted can regularly be found touting his lively style in the pages of the Times Newspaper)! Congratulations to Mr Allwood and Mr Singer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic, 17 Nov 1999

This review is from: The Red and the Black: Glory and Uncertainty at Saracens plc (Hardcover)
A very honest portrayal of a now premier rugby club. You sense the two authors very different approaches to the game; Singer the consumate professional and Alwood the inspirational dandy, throughout, in a parody of the professional/amateur debate which has rocked the game. A triumph.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book, 15 Dec 2013
This review is from: The Red and the Black: Glory and Uncertainty at Saracens plc (Hardcover)
Almost seems like another time now when this book was written, As mentioned in another review a great read on what changes took place between the amateur era and the professional era. Its very close and honest and I found myself really enjoying this gritty in depth book. It feels a little short when you first pick it up but actually is full of detail. If you are a rugby fan from the 90s its great as all the names are in there but also just great for Saracens fans like myself. Their achievements and growth as a club need to be read to be believed as they went from playing in parks full of dog muck to winning trophies competing for the tittle and now onto where they are. Great read.
