I bought this book for myself, not for my 9-year-old son! It is a classic 'picture book' with flaps to lift to discover letters written by Darwin, drawings etc and kids would probably love it. The problem is, the book is so beautiful I just couldn't bear seeing it wrecked by little hands tearing all the flaps... So the book is mine and my little boy can look at it with me, and enjoy it a lot more I'm sure. The book is about Darwin's voyage on the Beagle and is full of fantastic original drawings, maps, family history and it reads like a diary/biography. It's a mix of writing, pictures, short descriptions which make it nice and easy to read/look at. A must for fans of Darwin, history and natural history.

I bought this book to read with my grandson aged 6, and found myself immersed in it too. I like the little extras in the envelopes and hidden under the flaps, they give a little boy, (and a not so little grandparent!)the excitement of discovering things. The book is so well written it is a joy to read.
