5.0 out of 5 stars I hope to see more from this young author, 2 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Jake's Bones (Hardcover)
This excellent book will be of interest to any child who is curious about the world and how things (and animals) work. It is written by a young man who really knows his subject.

Each double-page spread of the book is laid out in poster-like fashion, with photographs of specimens (many from Jake's own collection) accompanied by short but informative text. In a book aimed at children, it's good to see that the correct scientific terminology is used throughout. Though presented in a simple manner, the book does not dumb-down the subject.

Sections include an introduction to bones and skeletons, advice on collecting, handling, and preparing for display. Some specific animals are covered in some detail including common ones such as dogs, cats, hedgehogs, and various birds. Some more exotic animals are covered, too, including crocodiles & leopard. Several double pages are set aside for dinosaurs. A handy glossary of terms is included at the end.

Overall and enjoyable read for children and adults alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb book packed with bone information & illustration, 11 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Jake's Bones (Hardcover)
How to collect bones; how to identify bones; what role the bones have in different animals' bodies…

This book has all this plus much, much more. Bought it for my young nephew, and have now bought a copy for myself too!
Fantastic clear photographs of the author's collection of bones, along with reams of bite size facts and fascinating information bursting out of every page. It's easy to read and you absorb so much new information… I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Best of all - it is FUN. Never seen inside a fox, a hedgehog, a whale, a snake, a leopard, a bird, or a seal before…

How many times do you go for a walk, find a random bone, and don't quite know what it is? This book engages that curiosity and runs with it…

A great introductory guide to what all us creatures have in common - the bones that keep us all up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top bone collecting advice for naturalists, both young and old(er), 2 Jun. 2014
This review is from: Jake's Bones (Hardcover)
The collection and study of animal skulls and bones is thought by some to be morbid, gruesome, somehow cruel, even a sign of an unhealthy state of mind, but these misconceptions are fully and convincingly dispelled by this remarkable and comprehensive illustrated study of vertebrate skeletons, written by a talented and knowledgeable communicator. The most surprising issue here is the age of the author - just 12 years old at the time of publication. Have no fear, however, that Jake's comparative youth implies a superficial treatment of the subject; he has collected skulls since the age of six and has been blogging about his bones, and many other aspects of natural history, since the age of seven. All facts and information have been checked by a professional museum curator prior to publication.
I followed Jake's blog ([...]) for several years prior to the publication of this book and it has been a pleasure to watch his inquiring mind develop and mature over that time. His passion and enthusiasm really grabs the reader's attention, whether on screen or on the printed page, and the publication of this book is another step towards popularising the long neglected subject of mammal and bird osteology. There is no other book currently in print which deals with this subject in such an accessible way, nor in such depth. Essential for any naturalist's bookshelf or library, whatever their age.

This is the best children's book I',ve seen in a very long time !
Educational , natural history, fascinating and fun ! This should be on every child's bookcase . .....in every school library ....in every local library ...a great birthday present or Christmas stocking filler !
I will enjoy sharing it with my grandson , who is only two years old and loves wildlife and natural history already !.... but it is probably going to be a big hit with older children , all the way up to ..er....my age...which is fairly old : )

This is a BRILLIANT book! Don't be fooled by Jake's age, this is not a simple book and could be enjoyed by all ages. I've really had fun reading through this book and found plenty to learn in each section. The descriptions are clear and interesting and the background science detail is in-depth.
Definitely a book to share and is the answer to a few birthday and Christmas present dilemmas this year!
