5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting translated story, a great discovery, 16 Aug. 2014

What a lovely fantastical story. After a chapter, I was enchanted. I've read some Pushkin translated (children's) books before and been impressed.

This title in English is 'The Cat who came in from the Roof'. Tibble, a journalist, is obsessed with cats and is about to lose his job unless he finds something news-worthy to report on. As luck would have it, he runs into a strange young woman stuck up a tree, scared of a dog. Minou claims to be a cat, turned inexplicably into a human. A very catlike, purring human.

Yet she has contacts all round the town, a network of cats that might just be able to rustle up the news stories Tibble needs to keep his job. We meet cats who have their ear to the floor in Council chambers, the church, the school (he's my favourite).

Minou's cat-like behaviour gets her in trouble repeatedly. Yet her information also allows Tibble to uncover all kinds of secrets, and it was a delightful read watching the cats of the town truly those with the knowledge of what is really going on.

There's a mystery included in the story. There's deception and cat teamwork. It's a lovely modern fairy story that actually could be set in a contemporary small town or a Victorian world. It feels timeless. The writing is lovely, the translation good (though "That takes the cake!" made me giggle).

This could make a delightful children's film. It's a little too difficult for a newly emergent reader but 8-11 year olds will enjoy by themselves, or those with a grown up would enjoy a little younger.

9 to 99? Really? Well, yes........ Saw this book reviewed in the Telegraph recently, and ordered it. It's a Dutch children's classic, translated into English this year and published by Pushkin Children's Books. I wonder why no-one found this treasure earlier?!

Tibble is a young, shy, newspaper report who writes really well, but mostly about cats, and never about current news. When he meets Miss Minou, a rather "cattish" young lady, he finds that she is his source of all sorts of little news stories that the editor of his newspaper is happy to publish. But there is a mystery here. Minou is cattish, because once upon a time she really was a cat.

The appeal of this book is that it does not talk down to children, which makes it suitable for any age at all, and for anyone who loves a well told tale, particularly those who love tales about cats, this is a delight. The author Annie Schmidt was obviously a great observer - there is a villain here, people lose their jobs, some people are kinder than others, some people hate cats; and the cats..... well, if you have a cat, if you ever had a cat, if you admire cats, then you will find that every nuance of cat behaviour is here! Lovely to read aloud to a child, which means an adult can enjoy it at the same time; great and easy read for children want to read on their own, and great for anyone who admires cats.

Well done Pushkin for getting this lovely book translated and published - Oh, and a great cover, too!

My daughter is 8 years old and she read this with great enthusiasm in only a few days over the summer holiday. She enjoyed this as much as Clarice Bean written by Lauren Child.

5.0 out of 5 stars I did enjoy the development of the original idea of a cat ..., 4 Sept. 2014

Enchanting little book- read it in one sitting. I did enjoy the development of the original idea of a cat turning into a person, and the consequences of being 'cattish' as well as human... plenty of laughs. There is also a baddy human, and lots interesting character cats...
I think this book would appeal to teenagers and to the young at heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars A super story..., 19 Aug. 2014

I loved it: a flowing, whimsical story, perfect in print but just waiting to be filmed. A story for cat people, of course, but also a way to enjoy felines for those who usually wheeze and sneeze at their approach.
