This is the fifth story in the third season of the new Fourth Doctor Adventures, featuring in this season Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, and Louise Jameson as Leela.
The Doctor’s keen on a nice peaceful quiet holiday and the Tardis lands on what he thinks will be the ideal spot. But Leela is convinced she can feel evil, and they realise they are on a planet where they can see the remains of a civilisation. Meanwhile, a survey ship looking for minerals or lifeforms is scanning the planet, the crew looking out for anything worth landing their ship for. And somewhere on the planet, someone is watching them. Who is Morax, and why is Nurse Torvik keeping him prisoner?
This is a great story; it really plays to the strengths of the classic 1970s Doctor Who stories, where the Doctor and Leela find themselves pitted against a formidable and unknowable foe. Tom Baker and Louise Jameson are in top form, and are ably supported by a great guest cast. Jane Goddard as Nurse Torvik and the voice of the computer does a great job. The crew of the Oligarch are well played, with Blake Ritson playing Pilot Kellaway particularly well, I thought. The part of Morax is played brilliantly by Gareth Thomas (known to many of us from his years as Blake on Blake’s 7). The voice of the tortured scientist is very evocative given the difficulty of playing his character in an audio medium.
A great story, a great Fourth Doctor and Leela story, this is a worthy addition to the Fourth Doctor adventure range.
