This review is from: Phantoms of the Deep (Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor Adventures) (Audio CD)
Fifth release in the series of Doctor Who audio adventures that feature Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, and Mary Tamm as his companion Romana. This one also features John Leeson voicing K9.

The story runs for two parts of thirty minutes each [approx]. It's complete on a single cd. And it stands pretty much entirely on it's own, thus casual listeners should be able to get into it without having heard any of the previous ones in this run.

Set in the near future, it sees a deep sea exploration vehicle heading into the Mariana Trench. At the very bottom of an ocean, it's one of the most inhospitable places on Earth.

Thus the crew don't expect to see a Police Box down there.

The Doctor and his friends join the crew on their journey. They receive a strange warning. And find terror awaits at the foot of the ocean...

The first part is an excellent lesson in pacing. The first ten minutes introduce us to the three people on the expedition. Then there's a typically entertaining TARDIS scene. Before both sets of characters come together.

The next ten minutes take them along on their trip. With strange events starting to happen.

Suddenly there's a moment that will make you gasp. And from then on the story is atmospheric, creepy, and totally involving. You really won't see the first cliffhanger coming, either.

Although the second part does have some familiar themes it never lets up, and remains a gripping listen throughout.

A high quality, well written and produced product, with many memorable moments and some excellent sound design, this is well worth a listen.

There's a trailer for the next release in this run on the track after the end of part two.

And just over fifteen minutes of interviews with cast and crew on the three tracks after that.

Review.
This is the Third 5 star review release I've given for The Fourth Doctor Adventures series 2 Back to Back & Lost Stories Boxset.

This story is a underwater adventure set on a deep sea exploration vessel at the furthest reaches of the bottom of the ocean were a group of researchers are heading to Mariana Trench.

The last thing the crew of the research Submarine vessel expected to see at the bottom of the ocean is a English Blue Police Box.

The Doctor, Romana & K9 board the vessel & Captian Patricia Sawyer begins Quizing the Doctor of his reasons for being lost under the bottom of the sea in a Blue Police Box.

But as ever the Doctor's curiosity always gets the better of him turning the conversation around asking what there doing in the farthest depths of the ocean?, Unknown to the Timelord the Tardis is flushed up to the oceans surface.

The Doctor & Romana volunteer to help the researchers who are investigating a long lost submarine.

But they are not quite alone as there are squid like creatures lurking also in the deep waters of the ocean, whom posses a degree of super intelligence who unleash there attack on the vessel, The Goblins are coming & they aren't letting anyone out alive.

Can the Doctor, Captain Sawyer & her crew survive & reach the destination of Mariana Trench?, Can the Doctor find a way to defeat the Goblins & just why is K9 behaving strangely?

Thjs is a exciting adventure fast paced & brimming with tension by writer Jonathan Morris who is one of Big Finishes best writer's delivering first rate storys on a regular basis.

The production values are of the highest quality a credit to Big Finishes production team & the underwater scenes really add to the drama making it a tense compact adventure.

Tom Baker is on commanding form here stealing every scene he's in as the Fourth Doctor you always feel Tom's story are unscripted whether this is to do with the writing of Jonathan Morris or Tom ad libs to the script but it works.

The late Mary Tamm delivers her slightly sarcastic Romana & is a clever foil for the Fourth Doctors larger than life personality.

K9 John Leeson gets a lot more to do in this story & is responsible for episode 1 cliffhanger.

This is a highly entertaining adventure & one of the best Fourth Doctor releases to date,

A must buy for fans of Doctor Who & the Fourth Doctor adventures.

Mary Tamm as 'Romana' is excellent and Tom Baker's as brilliant as always. Could they have done this on TV back then? I don't think so!
