5.0 out of 5 stars 'we're the Sweeney, son, and we haven't had any dinner!', 2 Oct 2012

This review is from: Sweeney! The Official Companion (Updated Edition) (Paperback)
I feel very privileged to review this wonderfully informative, nostalgic and updated edition of the book.

Personally,I have great memories of the series as a youth, back in the 1970's.When proper villains wore nylon stockings over they're 'loaves of bread'.Sported grimy combat jackets and were usually armed with 'sawn-off' double-barreled 'shooters'!

Mr Ian Kennedy Martin, creator of 'The Sweeney' and a wealth of talented actors, stunt people, technicians and writers gave us a thrilling treat back then, and still to this very day...

My tolerant and fairly liberal minded parents would let me watch every episode on school nights.I always knew that the suitably melancholy end title music for 'The Sweeney' heralded the fact that it was time to go up the stairs for some 'Bo-peep. Then, the next school day was spent re-enacting the previous nights episode in the playground...anyway, enough of my childhood memories...

The foreword is a lovely recollection by D.S George Carter himself,Dennis Waterman. Writing with affection, about his experiences acting in the series, and working alongside the late, great John Thaw as 'D.I Jack Regan'.

After an introduction to the actors and characters from the series, the origins of 'The Sweeney'and a wonderfully researched history of the famous and now legendary production company, Euston films'.The reader is then presented with an episode guide, right from the pilot episode 'Regan', which was originally broadcast as an episode of the much lamented Thames Television series 'Armchair Cinema'.
This is not just a 'run-of-the-mill' episode guide folks! Oh no, it has the production team, transmission dates and times. The entire cast for every single episode and two 70's 'Sweeney' cinema releases. The Authors even mention the latest re-imagined, cinema release with Ray Winstone and Ben Drew.Everything, you ever wanted to know about the world of London's two toughest, flying squad Detectives.

We are also treated to classic dialogue quotes, names and faces of other fine actors, who have featured in the series.

My favorite,'Inside information',features fascinating details, quirks and unusual facts about each episode. The book also features some beautiful stills from the series, film posters, other book covers and even c.d and record sleeves from music releases.
You won't be left hungry when you read this edition of 'Sweeney!:The official companion'.The two tough 'geezers',Robert Fairclough and Mike Kenwood, really do have so much enthusiasm and genuine affection for the series to share with the reader and fans of the series, young and not so young...This is what makes it a great read!

You can still re-live those beautifully atmospheric 16mm 'grainy' episodes on ITV4 at present.
The entire series is also available on DVD. Series one has also had a sparkling, 'tarted-up' release on Blu ray too! Both available on Amazon.co.uk.
For gawd's sake, Keep the book handy when watching 'The Sweeney'.It just makes the viewing experience even more fun! Or else..on go the 'cuffs', and then those immortal words...'all right Tinkerbell! You're nicked!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sweeney, The Sweeney, da dah da da dah da da dah da!, 4 Jan 2013

This review is from: Sweeney! The Official Companion (Updated Edition) (Paperback)
As a 45 year old long-term fan of The Sweeney I found this book to be ideal. The authors are, to my mind, very objectively accurate in their summing up of the four original TV series and the two 1970s films. The plots of all the original episodes are nicely detailed and the information about notable faces/actors in each episode is most welcome and fitting given the many great acting talents that graced the series. Messrs Thaw, Waterman and Morgan are also well covered. An absolutely essential purchase for any fan of the original show.

I bought this as I've always loved the Sweeney and was watching some reruns. It has lots of information and I found it a useful companion book. Not as good as the Professionals book though.
