4.0 out of 5 stars A Surreal and Funny Story for Teens, 27 May 2013

This short novella by Carnegie medal winning author Meg Rosoff is slightly surreal to say the least. It tells the story of a 17 year old girl called Jess, who ends up having a moose baby with her upper class boyfriend. In the world of the book, some pregnancies do end in non human children being born. At a self help group Jess meets a couple who have given birth to an ostrich. The whole book is extremely bizarre, and tells of the difficulties of bringing up a moose child who just can't fit into pre school due to weighing 100 lbs and having no opposable thumbs. It is funny and quite clever and very weird, and not at all like anything else you may have read of Rosoff's.

This book is published by Barrington Stoke, an independent publisher who specialise in publishing dyslexia friendly books, and stories which are geared for people with reading problems. The stories are generally short, with a simple, clear to read font, printed on off white paper (easier for dyslexic eyes to read). The chapters are short, and there are few words on a page, with lots of white space around them, as this also helps children with reading problems. The books are tailored for different interest groups and ages, which is part of what makes them so successful. Often, books which are easier for dyslexic children to read are too childish for the age of the child, and this can put older children off reading altogether. Barrington Stoke offers a range of different interest books for the whole child reader spectrum right up to teen fiction, which is what this is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dyslexia friendly format is great, 29 Aug 2013
This review is from: Moose Baby (Paperback)
Bought this for my 13 year old dyslexic daughter in a bookshop having found a section with a handful of dyslexic friendly books, and this was the one which looked least 'childish' in terms of storyline.

The format, cream/yellow paper, text font etc, clearly makes a difference as it was evidently easier than usual to read, and she read it in less than a day - which as you'll know if you have dyslexia is not easy or common.

The story itself is a bit wierd, but engrossing enough to maintain interest - the rating is probably a combination of 5 star for the format, and 3 star for the content.

A fabulous short read for young adults (and older).

Great idea: a teenage mother gives birth... To a moose. Which, in this story, is unusual but not unheard of. So we see the accelerated story of parenthood through her loving eyes, with lots of the usual milestones covered, but with slightly different outcomes.

I saw a teenager order this at the library and immediately followed suit, loving Rosoff's longer novels and keen to try shorter fiction that also tells a fun and full story without talking down to readers. I was amused throughout.

I think it's one for the older teenagers (more 14+ than for anyone younger), but the short chapters and original concept will keep interest.

Really wanted to hear more! There could be a sequel. Please, Meg?!
