This review is from: Transcendent Vocation: Why gay clergy tolerate hypocrisy (Paperback)
This book was recommended to me by a friend. It wouldn't have been a book I would have chosen for myself and I expected that it would be fairly dry and difficult to get through. I needn't have worried - it was a really interesting read! In a nutshell, the book gives a detailed and well-written history of the official stance of the Church of England towards homosexuality during a 40 year period up to 2007, contrasts it with the changes in attitude in secular society during the same time, and shows how the Church's official approach has been riddled with hypocrisy which gay clergy manage to overcome because they have such a strong conviction that they have been called to God's service (= the 'transcendent vocation' of the title). One of the things which makes the book so readable is that the author quotes verbatim from interviews with anonymous clergymen, both heterosexual and homosexual, and this gives a fascinating insight into the gulf between the Church's 'party line' and the views and experiences of its clergy. There are a few annoying typos in the book, and some inconsistent spellings (Jeffery/Jeffrey jumped out quite a bit) which might bother you if you mind about that sort of thing, but that didn't distract from the main impression of the book - a genuinely interesting and thought-provoking read. Highly recommended.

A well reasoned and convincing account.
The current situation appears to breed hypocrisy - not a healthy situation for the institution of Christianity.

This was a fascinating and insightful exploration of the way in which the strong sense of vocation to the priethood among gay clergy serves to overide the difficulties they face by the homophobic attitude of the Church of Englnad. It repays careful study as the anonymity assured to the contributors means that we hear some very honest self-appraisal. An excellent piece of research.
