5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book presents the ancient and timeless Jain philosophy, in an accessible and scientific way. This is a very difficult task as the original scriptures have been written in ancient Indian languages like Prakrit and Sanskrit. It presents very complex ideas, like that of Karma, in an understandable way and uses an axiomatic approach. Both Professor Mardia and Dr. Rankin...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a great start
I have only read 2 chapters in but I have become tiresome of the constant referencing and phrase translating.

From the preview and descriptions etc I got the impression that this was going to be more about the way of life and how you can practice it and use it in your life, very much along the lines of 'The Power of Now', which I love.

However it's...

Rankin are very talented scholars of Jain philosophy and have written a number of books on this subject. I strongly recommend it.

This review is from: Living Jainism: An Ethical Science (Paperback)
This books presents the principles of Jainism clearly, comprehensively, and accurately, thus making a complex and complicated subject accessible to Jains and non-Jains alike. The authors' approach, of explaining the ideas of this ancient and remarkable philosophy through the terminology and metaphors of modern science, is both innovative and helpful. I would recommend this book for everyone who wishes to further their understanding of Jainism.

I have only read 2 chapters in but I have become tiresome of the constant referencing and phrase translating.

From the preview and descriptions etc I got the impression that this was going to be more about the way of life and how you can practice it and use it in your life, very much along the lines of 'The Power of Now', which I love.

However it's not, it's more referencing the history, names, translating and the science side of it which has lost me out of the book now.

Very sorry but wasn't what I personally was looking for.
