4.0 out of 5 stars Gunther in Katyn Wood
The 9th Bernie Gunther tale is one of the better ones. The author again places his roguish Berlin detective in a real historical situation, with real historical characters. This limits the degree of surprise [Gunther can't affect the outcome of the Battle of Kursk etc.] and it does mean that the murders the policeman tackles are but drops in an ocean of trouble. On this...

2.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Going
You never quite escape the author in this novel. The heavy hand of research grips your shoulder through almost every page - Philip Kerr, for all his experience, to me seems unable to fillet away the type of ponderous facts that may be interesting to him in a research library but that waylay the unsuspecting reader who attempts to wade through a text that is thick with...

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, 18 May 2013

Philip Kerr is a genius at evoking the feel in Germany as the Nazis rise; Characters are well formed and interesting and you have to love Bernie; that and the black humour / sarcasm makes for terrific reading

Though I think the earlier Kerr novels - set in the '30s when Bernie was still a cop - were better, this is pretty good. The new setting in Smolensk and Bernie's new role with the War Crimes Bureau add interest to the series.

Bernie Gunther keeps getting better and better. One of my favourite crime writers. Sadly, I can read faster than Philip Kerr can write, so I now have to wait ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous as usual, 8 July 2013

The Bernie Gunther novels are brilliant and in many ways are getting better as they progress. Meticulously researched, if you haven't tried them I would strongly recommend you go back to the first novels in the series.
